i know trackrat...or, maybe it was texroadkill had a pair or one of these...and raved about them...

now, I know its a great mic, and I am considering getting a pair to "step up" my instrument recordings...but here is my question..

i have a pair of RodeNT3s...I like them, but for some things not so much.

Will KM184s sond a lot better than nt3s, going into a preamp like a Mackie XDR?

Or do you have to have a really nice pre (no pun intended) to even take advantage of the neumanns?

It's me. Damn nice mics. They'll work with Mackie pre's but I'm liking them less and less. The 184's sound much better with my HHB's or especially the MindPrint Envoice. On nylon string guitar, they sound bigger than life. No spam but if you follow the www button on my post to Nowhereradio and listen to Test Jam. It's a KM-184 on the guitar (and Earthworks SR-71's on the mandolins).

But, that doesn't really matter...becuase I am getting either an RNP, or a Great River, or both...within the next couple months.

This was just more of an "in theory" question than anything.

I like my TLM 103, some other people here don't care for it. In that sense it's no different than 99% of the other gear that's discussed here. (THE RNC is the exception that comes to mind).

But I'm not sure how anyone's opinions about gear can be "unbiased".

I've used the tlm-103 extensively in the past and it can sound pretty good for the price. However, recently I was considering the purchase of one but decided against it. Instead I opted to save about 300 dollars more and go with the Soundelux u195. The u195 coupled with the fatmode, roll off and pad gave me 3 excellent tonal variations...almost like having 3 mics for the price of one. The step up in quality is worth the extra money in my opinion.

Both good mics but I chose the u195

hmm, not familiar with that one.

see right now I only have one LD Condensor, which is an NTK.

I'm happy with it but I want to get another LD to have a different flavor (esp. for female vocals), and esp. to do some of the "3 mic drum technique" stuff, where Fletcher reccomends using a couple of LDs in different positions.

Plus I am just a whore to Neumann....so, TLM103 is going to get a hard look...glad you guys at least think it is decent. I've listened to it a bit but not in a good enviroment, and I thought it sounded like it had potential.

That would be U195.

I believe it is supposed to be a clone of the Neumann U47FET. So you would sort of be getting a Neumann anyway.

Lawson also has a 47FET knock-off. You may want to compare prices, as perhaps the Lawson might be a better deal (haven't checked myself). Especially since their ELAM knock-off is less expensive than the Soundeluxe version (ELUX), and they certainly have a proven winner in the L47MP.

But didn't you start out asking about 184's? They're certainly a whole different animal from a 47FET!

I own a pair of KM-184's as well as a TLM 103. I use the 184's for guitar and the 103 for vocals....both do a VERY good job at it...you can even use the 184s plus a 103 for extra warmth when recording guitar...best of luck to ya!

sorry it has taken so long to reply...in exchange for the recording gear as well as some extra cash to cover the upgrades I'm building a fingerstyle guitar. It will be a Quilted mahagony/redwood OM. Martin 42 style inlay and brazilian rosewood binding...lots of other little details...

I've auditioned TLM103 extensively, and considered buying it, so I guess I'm not particularly biased. I simply prefer Studio Projects C3 at 2/3 the price, give or take. For me, the next step up the food chain would be AKG414, either version, which I prefer to the 103 for vocals, and to the 184 for overheads. I think I need to call my buddy at gearaholics anonymous to talk me out of it.-Richie
