UPDATE: Day five, trying to sync the 2488 to Logic 8. MADE SOME PROGRESS, as the two are finally synced; however the time quality of the sync is still to be determined. Here is the one and only way the two can time communicate: Logic is the MASTER using MTC. The midi/usb interface cable needs to be hooked up as follows: USB into computer, the out of the cable to the IN of the 2488. The IN of the cable to the out of the 2488. In Logic, select INTERNAL on General sync page, 25 fps, and ALways. On the MIDI sync page in Logic, select checkbox for Transmit MTC. Select the usb/midi cable interface which should show up. On the 2488neo, in the sync menu: source External, frame 25, generator off of MTC. Make sure logic and the 2488 are running at the same tempo. And place two or three measures in front of your song. Hit the play button on Logic, then play button on the 2488 and the two will run. The 2488 will beginning running in sync. Next I will determine the accuracy of the sync. Important: For a Yamaha XS synth, the sync has to be on Auto, not MTC or midi or it will not play. Essentially, MTC is used only for controlling the 2488.

Plug the 2488 MIDI OUT to your interface MIDI IN.

Set the 2488 to use INTERNAL clocking and GENERATOR to CLOCK.

I don't know Logic but at this point you need to enable MIDI sync. It may be a preference setting or something similar.

Once it's connected and both parts set up correctly, Logic will track the 2488 tempo and respond to the transport controls as well.

couple questions

1. I am guessing that I should use a midi/usb cable, the midi side connected to the 2488, and the usb side going into my Mac. right?

Next, is it better to use MTC rather than clock? Or rather, why clock, than MTC?

I just went back and read the logic 8 manual which says that Logic will not accept a midi clock signal, only send . . . which means that if I want to use the 2488 as the master, I will have to use MTC. I'll be sure to set the tempo on logic and the 2488 as the same.

The 2488 only uses USB for data transfers via the FAT partition, not music. So you need a MIDI interface to Logic and a MIDI cable.

You want the 2488 MIDI generator to generate a clock signal not a tone. It's this that syncs the two. See page 82 of the manual for more.

Okay then set the 2488 as the slave and let Logic control.

Yes, the 2488 does use mmc and so does logic. However, on p 856 of the Logic manual, there are these sentences: "If you want to use the external master's transport controls (the 2488), you don't need to use MMC. In this situation, Logic Express will follow the MTC master (the 2488) as a slave." That's what I'm thinking of doing, using the 2488 as the Mtc master. Also, yesterday I got confused, thinking that a USB cable alone between the Mac and the 2488 will handle the midi sync communication, but that's wrong. Because all my midi keyboards communicate by a USB cable into the MAC when recording, I thought the 2488 would work similarly. The 2488 manual provides no explanation at all in this area regarding cable connections to a computer. Today I purchased a USB/midi interface cable for $10 from Amazon. It should do the job. Thanks for your help, a lot. Danny

The news is not good. 2488 and Mac running Logic can not be synced.

I tried syncing the 2488neo to my MAC running Logic 8, using two different USB/MIdi interface cables, the second cable an Emu Xmidi. Nothing worked. I tried MTC, Midi clock, and MMC, in both directions, Master and slave. I made all menu adjustments recommended in the Logic manual and in the 2488 manual. Nothing worked. My conclusion: The two can not be synced. If anyone has synced the two, please let us know how your did it. I kind of suspected the two can not be synced because there is nothing on the net explaining how to do it.

This sync method worked. All tracks maintained perfect sync. The only slight hitch is that recording started at the one hr. mark, so for playback I need to cut out the first hour of empty space.

Good news. What exactly did you do? And why did recording start at the one hour mark?
