ok so I have a problem. I bought an audio interface so I could record my guitar through it. I know what an audio interface is and what it does. However, I can't figure out for the life of me how to get this thing to work. I need someone to answer a few questions for me.

Can I record directly into the interface without using an amp or anything else, just the interface alone? Like literally just plug my guitar into the interface and that's it?

Also, my amp only has 2 plugs. One is the input, the other just says "phones"
Is the phones considers an output? Or does that mean my amp has no output? And if my amp has no output, and I have no mic, does that mean I basically can't use my audio interface?

I have a steinberg ur22. The amp is a dean amp, not sure what kind. All it has is gain, treble, bass, and mid, along with an input plug and a "phones" plug. I have the interface installed and everything, and I can connect it to all my DAWs, it's just not registering and sound coming through whatsoever. Someone help me please!!

Hi,
You have two main options

  • Plug the guitar straight into a instrument-level(DI) input on the interface and record dry, then use an amp simulator for your tones.
  • Get a mic.

If you're going direct, plug into 'input two' and engage the 'hi-z' switch.

With some amps you can take a line-level output straight into your interface to record the amp's tone, but it usually sucks and it sound like you don't have a line-output anyway.

In the event this is not yet another drive-by 1-time poster:

On the front panel, there are 2 mic/line inputs - these are combination XLR/1/4" phone plug inputs. There is also a headphone ouput on the front panel.
On the back panel there are left and right line outputs - these should go to powered studio monitors (speakers). There are also MIDI in and out jacks and a USB jack.

I assume you know enough to plug the USB to your computer, download the proper Stenberg drivers and use a DAW.

What Steen says, but I think you're missing a couple of things. What kind of computer do you have? You'll have to change the configuration in your OS to get the input from your interface (not the "built-in input" it usually does) and set the output to where ever you expect to hear your music from (could be your computer speakers).

Also I think you're missing the amp simulator as Steen said. There are a bunch of free ones out there that work pretty well. I would do an Internet search for "free amp simulator plug-in" or "free amp modeling plug-in" and download and install it. I use Amplitube 3 (which you have to pay for) but I've looked at BIAS Desktop recently and it's awesome. It's $99 I think and you can tweak literally everything about the amps (tubes, circuitry, signal chain, etc).

Post if you have more questions. I'm glad to help.

I would not recommend using a different device for output than input.
