Dont really know what to expect... I just figured that at $750, it would be worth checking out just to see.

My new mic

I've not had my hands on this this one but I dare say it' well worth $750. I haven't heard a lot of chatter about this mic, good or bad come to think of it.

Well, I just bought this Neumann, and I just bought a Neumann/Gefell UM70 fet for $750, too... I still have my TLM-103... I am trying to find the mic that will make ME sound thicker and more "pro". I will probably sell all three of these (or probably two, the Gefell is just going to become a staple, I can already tell).
I figure I'll end up selling the TLM-103 and the 193 sometimes in the next 3 weeks and buying a Soundelux ifet7. I am pretty good about getting back what I pay for things. The 193 should resell for $750 since it has the $300 shockmount with it too, and this gives me a chance to check it out and get a real opinion and compare it to other mics and then either keep it or resell it.
So, anyone wanna buy a TLM-103 or TLM-193 in about 3 weeks? :) Might not sell, never know. Depends. I really want that Soundelux, though.

I've never heard the 193 but I seem to recall some people calling it dark. Be sure to give us your opinions. I'm glad to see that you can afford to keep all three for a while and A/B them. That is always enlightening and more valuable than someone else's thoughts. Try to keep some tracks of all these mics so you can go back and compare even a year from now once they are long gone.

One good thing about the Soundelux is that most dealers that carry them will let you try them for awhile before your stuck with it. Not that I have doubts of the quality of Soundelux (I've owned a U195 myself) it just might not be right for you.

I certainly wish more people would be willing to buy and sell mics just to broaden their knowledge base like you do.

Good luck!

Yours is cooler though!

Bad news man. . . I went and looked on prosoundweb and gearslutz and found the following

Fletcher said

Prior to serial #5825 they were perhaps one of the 5 worst sounding LDCs I'd ever tried... at serial #5825 they made a change to the amplifer... now it just sucks.

A remarkably lifeless sounding piece of dung...
==============================================

That was about the extent. No one really said it was amazing. Even one guy, who had some MXL mics too said he didn't like it. Apparently this mic is neutral and flat. Not what you think of when someone mentions "Neumann."

I really trust Fletchers ear so I am just giving you this as a warning. You might really like it and be able to use it though.

Congratulations on the 635a! I have one of the older ray-gun looking 635's but they are supposed to be the same mic just different housing. I absolutely love mine. It's different than any other mic I have tried and at $25 it was hard to go wrong. Let me know what applications you find it particularly useful.

Regardless of how this turns out, I'm glad to see you experimenting. I respect Fletcher's opinion as much as the next guy but what's that old saying "one man's trash..." I would love to hear your comments on it when you get it and try to keep an open mind. (I know you will)

I saw Fletchers remarks previously too, but I ALSO found about 100 people that really love it on guitar cabs and for things requiring an accurate picture. I have heard it is rather dark souding, but so is a ribbon, and thats not bad at all. Ya know?

I just bought 2 Gefell M940's, too, and I'll be checking those out when they arrive.
So broke now. So stupid. Oh well.
True junkie.

Haha thats the spirit.

I bought my U87 earlier this year for a good deal. I never planned on it but it just popped up. Consequently, I didn't get to take a girl out (or myself) for a while. Also I ate much more Ramen Noodles than I would prefer. I finally have a bit of money again so what did I do? Buy a microphone. I realize it was only $50 dollars but it just proves my microphone addiction. I also finally got to take a great girl out.

Luckily my band is doing well, so that helps me eat and gets me wasted pretty often.

Do you find the 635a to require a bit of gain. I had to crank up to about 55db of gain on my voice. On a mackie that would have been very close to max. The mic doesn't sound broken or anything, I was just wondering. I can't wait to hear this thing on guitar amp!

I've never used my 635a mics on a voice, but I don't ever remember having to use 55dB of gain with them on anything I've used them on (electric guitar cabs and drum overheads)... And that's with +4dBu inputs on the recorder...

By the way, these little guys are known as "The Secret Weapons" on guitar cabs!

As for the 193, it's pretty decent as a non-hyped high-end "sound" but with the classic Neumann tight-lowend "sound". Good for VO work. Worth it for an insanely nice price... Like most current Neumanns... Otherwise, I'd take something else anyday.

Hell, I'd sell my consecutive-serial numbered (the the 3000s) 103s with all accessories, all in a flight-case, in a heart-beat, had they kept even half their value!!!

Ok, I have totally screwerd myself financially. Heh.
I cant screw the guy on ebay, so the TLM-193 is on the way. But, I cant afford to keep it. At all. I have just spend over $1500 on mics somehow and I owe the IRS $970, too.
So, I sold my TLM-103, and now I am going to sell the TLM-193 when it gets here.
For exactly what I paid, $750, and I'll even take the hit on all the shipping charges.

I just tried my 635 on vocals and yes I did have to use around 48 - 54 db of gain on my RNP. One thing to remember though (if gain becomes an issue) is that it is an omni and you can afford to get a little closer to it than with a normal cardioid.

Sorry to hear that dude. Maybe you could still put it through the paces for a night just to get the frame of reference.
