My humble Christmas Offering...

A "Jazzinated" take on "Silent Night, Holy Night"...

I hope you enjoy it. Fretless bass on the melody (Yes, the REAL one, for those who know me! :D )

It can be found at www.artistlaunch.com/llarion.

Thanks, and may your holidays be filled with peace, kindness, joy, and the love of your family and friends.

Cheers,
Phil "Llarion: The Jazzinator" Traynor

That sounded really nice Phil. What piano did you use?

I liked your transition chording. Was I hearing 4ths and/or sixths in some of them?

Thanks!!

The piano is a Roland RD-500, the default grand piano sound..

I tend, from an arangement standpoint, to go for a lot of ii-V-I and tritone substiture for the ii and/ot the V, and I'll borrow from minor witha a subtonic chord now and again... As for extended voicings, I'm prone to sprinkling minor 9ths, 7ths with a flat 9th (and occasionally a sharp5th), goofy stuff like that. :) Glad you enjoyed it!
:)

Really nice man. I play a lot of New-Age piano covers that use strange voicings and changes and even stranger time signatures.

7/8, 6/4, stuff like that. It really throws me to go from 4/4 to 7/8 until I get used to the piece.

Anyway, your changes reminded me a lot of that music I love so much. Very commanding, assertive, and leading. I liked it a lot.

<--- suckered by those @*&#!! sunglasses

Ya got me with those sunglasses on your thread title... this thread's gotta be bitchin-cool ... you've learned Gidge's secret  Keep those sunglasses on!

Very nice rendition... the lead instrument was interesting and unexpected... nice changes, spicy arrangement -- they make the song sound more "grown up", or something. A fine addition to the x-mas party here.

From now on, SUNGLASSES on every thread!

;)

I had to wear the glasses; it cuts down on the glare from my head! :D

that was cool.. the lead instrument was a fretless bass? I like it.. very cool rendition.. I had mixed feelings about the background voice patch, but that's a minor preference..

this is an excellent version..

Yeah, and a CHEAP fretless too, it's a Carlo Robelli (Sam Ash house brand) It has exquisite tone for such a low-price instrument...

Thanks for the spin! :)

Does anyone know of a good list of Public Domain Christmas material?

Super nice Phil,
Really dug the keys...very cool......

Merry Christmas man :D

nice arrangement. nice choice of Ka-jords... had a nice feel to it, especially.

tritone man...eh?

Very cool............a different direction for this tune.....I like the transitional chording a lot. using a fretless for the melody is an unuasual and interesting choice. I thought the bass could have used just a little more presence but everything else sounded pretty good.

Phil,

Beautiful. Nice jazzy feel to it. Silent Night is one of my favorite Christmas tunes.
I remember you from mp3.com.

Joro,
And the same to you, friend. Thanks very much!

Mixmkr,
Yep, I'm both a tritone man AND a Triton™ man! :) :)

Lt. Bob,
I'm such a neophyte on fretless. Still learning how to make it sound good. I decided a couple of weeks ago to play the fretless exclusively for a while to get myself better acclimated. I'm thinking of putting some flatwounds on it, I suspect it'll edge the sound more towards and acoustic bass, which would thrill me! :D

Blue Cyberia,
Wow, nice to be recognized! :) I knew a couple of folks that went by the name "Blue" in varying forms back then. Did you hit the Jazz forum on MP3C, and/or did you start your own jazz/blues BBS? Two of my "blue" friends have reviews posted on my AL site, Blue2Blue and Blueside... All this blue makes me blush red.. :)

Hey Llarion,
Nice stuff Jazzinator. A really nice and colorful arrangement. I love the keyboard and piano work. Im not real crazy about the fretless tone though. What processing is on it? I would like to be able to hear the instrument a little better.... The beauty of a fretless imo (aside from the obvious) is the "squeeze" that you can get. I think you know what i mean. I cant hear it well in this..... and i miss it.

Im nitpicking.......

Great stuff Phil,

G

No, you're not nitpicking at all; I actually agree with you. :) Chalk it up to my inexperience with the instrument; at the time of the recordign, I did not know how to get that trademark fretless sound. I still do't, really. As to the processing, it's a little stereo chorus; intended to echo that sound to what extent it could. As I work with the instrument more and more, my respect for those that can get that wonderful sound grows immensely. I'll get it someday soon here... :)

Phil...........I think you'll find that the elusive sound you're looking for on the fretless is all in the midrange. It gets touchy trying to get it just right but you might try a little bit of boost at around 900hz. Then move that freq around a bit. It might need to be anywhere from 750hz to as much as 1300hz. You'll have to experiment but somewhere in that range a little bit of boost (no more than a couple of db) will bring out that sound you're wanting.
