Hopefully someone out there can help me. I am recording a band 'Live' using a Tascam 424 4-track recorder. I am trying to get the headphone signal (one jack) out to four pairs of headphones. I have been plugging into the headphone jack with stereo 'Y' connectors (3 total). The problem I am having is that the headphone signal is barely audible after plugging everything in. The sound is fine with a single headphone plugged in, but apparently I am losing some of the signal with my current configuration. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve this? I know it is basically a mickey mouse set up, but I am on a limited budget. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get a good, strong signal for the 4 headphone mix, for low cost, it would be greatly apprectiated. I am at my wits' end! Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your gonna have to spring for a head phone amp. maybe you can barrow one.
You can buy agood head phone amp for about $140.00 too much!!!
I seen one for $69.oo in musicians friends catalog. (Rolls HA43 stereo headphone amp)
Powers four pairs of headphones, volume control for each channel.

If you plan on recording the band live alot youll be needing a good HEADPHONE AMP

Yo Bigmess Recording Person:

If you are using "Y" connectors you may have this problema: Usually, the phones plug is STEREO. And, if you're using mono plugs that would drop your volume considerably.

Suggest you do as was suggested: I use a very inexpensive Peavey headphone amp. It will plug in 4 sets of phones, which is plenty for me. If you need more, you need to buy bigger.

yo, onebigmess;
I would suggest you look in a garage sale in your town for a home system stereo amp. I found a Kenwood AM/FM radio & amp for $2(!) that I'm using to power my monitors. After that, you can get a distribution box at "Ratty-old Shack" for around $10-20 which will allow 4 people to listen to themselves while you record. They'll also have extensions for your headphones and about anything else you need (sound like a salesman, don't I?). Anyway, I hope this has ben of help to you.

Hey Everyone (jimimac, the green hornet, and chipper) I've got all your responses and it looks like I will be heading back to the store for a headphone mixer. Thanks again for the tips.

you can use the effect send as a headphone out believe it or not! so take two stereo Y adaptors and plug one into toh headphone out the other into the effect sends out (this I believe is stereo) and there you go!

Disregard my last post, that out is not loud enough to drive headphones- you'll hear it, but like a gnat was singit to you. oops
