i was recommended to get the motu 828 preamp/interface.
i heard it sounds great.
i am also thinking about getting a mac g5.
any thoughts on this gear?
better interfaces?
thanks

I use an older version of the 828 on an Imac G4 800. The mkII is a newer model. I have never experienced any serious problems with the 828 and, for the price, it's a good solution for computers (particularly Macs) which have no PCI card slot. The sound is decent, although if you are really serious about sound quality you might add an outboard preamp and a separate A/D converter.

If you are buying a G5, however, you do have other options, including a card-based interface. There are also a bunch of other firewire interfaces like the Digidesign 002 Rack ($1199), the Presonus Digimax ($1099), and the M-Audio 410 ($399).

If you decide on the 828, you owe yourself and trip to Unicornation.com--the MOTU user's group site. I think you have to register to read posts, but it's worth it. Pay close attention to the MOTU hardware forum where there are frequent discussions on the 828. (I don't want to summarize what others are thinking, but look for posts highlighting known 828 MKII issues! There are plenty.)
