right now I record kick, snare, bass, guitar and vocals in mono and I'm not sure what's best for the rest so sometimes I do a stereo track for hihats, toms, crash/ride, and any pads and sometimes mono.

I'm wondering what you do or if there is a list of instruments to record in mono and in stereo.

Are you talking about real drums or fake???

sampled real ones that hopefully don't sound fake

OK, the reason I asked is that if it was a real kit, recording the hats, toms and cymbals in stereo is another way of saying you're using 2 overheads and panning them in stereo, which is pretty common practice.

For sampled drums, I'm less familiar with the various ways of doing that, but I would imagine you can treat those instruments as though they are on an "overhead" track and put them into 2 tracks, and pan them in stereo. But, I would think you can just put each instrument onto it's own track and pan them accordingly.

To answer this:

It's pretty simple. If you used one mic to record something, it's a mono instrument. Vocals, bass, guitar, etc....are usually recorded in mono.

Why did you come to this strategy?

well, I just read that you nearly always put, vocal, kick, snare and bass panned right in the center so that goes mono.

then I do alot of direct recording from my keyboard and it has some panning effects on it so I decided to do keyboard in stereo.

toms I notice are arranged so you have one panned left; one center and one right.

then hihats and symbols could be stereo because of those overhead mics.
