Mixer outputs Behringer 3282A

I am new here to this forum and I have a question I hope that some of you experienced people can answer. I have a Behringer 3282A and I am presently using the 8 Aux send to send to a Firepod. I would like to add a second Firepod and have the ability to record 16 at once. I am thinking I can use my 8 Subgroup outs for this.

My question is... on each channel I have activation buttons for say subgroup 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. How do I make sure that if I send 2 separate chanells to say 1-2, they are actually separated to the Pod? Do I pan them left and right at the subgroup output to make sure they are separated? Or do you know of another way to make sure that I can make sure that say channel 16 goes to subgroup 1 and say 17 goes to subgroup 2.

It's probably staring me right in the face but I would like some input from people who have probably done this before.

There should be insert jacks on the back of the mixer...one for each channel. Take a mono 1/4 cable, connect one side to the insert of channel one, but only insert it until you hear it click once. It will only be about half way into the jack. the other end should go into channel one of your firepod. Do this for all channels and you are good to go.

Yep, what thajeremy said. That mixer has inserts on channels 1 through 24, so you'll be good to go.

I don't know why I didn't think of that. I guess I wasn't looking at the most obvious choice.

One more question, if I go through the insert, do I still channel through the mixer EQ and effects sends? Or is it just a direct input/output lead?

I believe most mixer inserts are post-fader/post-channel eq. Onboard FX and main bus eq would not affect the signal. You might want to check your manual for your board, though.

Personally I prefer to record dry and add FX in the mix.

Yes I agree, and I try to mix track with no effects and add later. I guess I was more interested in the mixer EQ most of all. Sometime it may need a little EQ going in.

The nice thing is you can still use you aux sends for "comfort reverb" without worrying about how it's recorded.

If you really want to get flexable, get a patchbay and use TRS->2 TS Y-cables to connect all your inserts to normalled pairs!

why do you only insert the cables halfway? what would happen if you inserted them in fully?

the insert points are for TRS plugs, and is for inserting FX and such. When you insert a TRS plug all the way, you break the circuit and the signal, instead of traveling through the rest of the board and out the main outputs, will go out of the insert point, into an external processer. Then from the processors output, back into the board to complete the way to the main outs. If you insert the plug all the way, and you dont have a return signal, you wont have any signal making its way through the board. The signal will still make it to the soundcard however. So, inserting a TS or mono plug halfway will let the signal travel to the soundcard, but will not break the circuit, which will let the signal continue to travel throught the mixer to the main outs.
