Hi, I in the middle of developing a small size studio. I have a yamaha stage custom set miked with two octava 319s for overheads, a shure mic kit for the toms and bass drum, and I am using a shure ksm 27 but its not giving me the tight respons that I'm looking for. I am recording into a yamaha 2816 and it only has two phantom powered inputs that are being used for overheads. So I would like to know if anybody knows a better way to use the ksm with the snare, and if anybody knows of a great snare mic with a tight response that would be appreciated.
THank you

For snare, just use an sm57 or 58.

How are the 319's working out for you as overheads?

the 319s are decent, the only thing that i dont like about them is that they are omnidirectional so they dont capture the hi hat as well as i hoped

my fault ive been using the mk 012s im retarded i dont know why i thought i was using the 319s.

so is the best mic made for snare drum the sm 57 or are there better ones

The Beta 57 is really your best bet. It works good all around.
Also check out the JTS mics. They pretty much copy the shures but they are really good mics for home recording at a cheaper price.

Thanks a lot man, what about the best mic for recording guitar out of an amp with a lot of heavy distortion.

I have to agree with Track Rat the 57's are just good all around mics. Get one if you don't already have one. But if you already have a good condenser mic then use it on the guitar amp if you are not going to record the guitar tracks live. Just make sure the amp can be turned down (low volume) and still get the same sound the guitar player is looking for.

ya, thanks i have a bunch of 57s and theyre awesome but ive been using a ksm27 on the guitar and i think the quality is a little better. But lets say that im not on a tight budget, what is a good hi end all around mic.

If you can put the ksm on the guitar then just use it unless you are having a problem with bleed over from other instruments.

For a bit more cash, An AT-4033 is one my favs. It's a great overhead mic, a damn good vocal mic and it's one of the first mic I reach for to mic a guitar amp.

so I have another question, i need two pairs of headphones, one wireless for drums and the other for monitoring, what is the deal with headphones amps and do u guys have any suggestions?
