Hello all.

Regular from www.talkbass.com here, referred over by a regular Talkbass and HomeRecording.com member. You guys have an excellent resource for recording here.

I hope I'm putting this question in the right forum. If not, could someone please refer where this should go and I'll gladly correct it.

Here's my question:

MiniDisc to PC Hard Drive

My MiniDisc player (Sony MZ-R700) came with a PC-link (USB port). As I understand it, I can take songs from my hard drive and record them to a MD, but I want to do the exact opposite, I want to take data from the MD, and save it to my harddrive, but I want to keep it digital.

Do I need special software? Do I need a different cable? Is this possible? I don't mind what format they're in when they're saved, because I assume I could always convert it to mp3.

Thank you much!

I might be wrong but don't you need a digital out to do that or does the PC-link (USB-port) handle it?

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to have to experiment with this and try some of this out. I received this response from someone else:

You need a card with a digital in (usually SP/DIF).

connect the digital out of the MD player with the digital in of the sound card.
You probably can't do it via USB without special software.

Select the digital in as recording source in Windows and/or your recording software (Soundforge, Wavelab, Cool Edit, etc.).
Hit record in the software and then play on the MD player. You'll get a wav file.

You need to cut the wav files to size afterwards, split it up depending on how many songs there are, and you can convert it to mp3 if you like.

CDex is a cool freeware tool for that (chose the Lame encoder for optimal results).

Hope that helps.

Any thoughts on this approach.

Yes, to connect via USB you would need to find a software driver for the device, which probably doesn't exist.

Hi all,

I have had great success recording from my MRZ-900 directly to my Soundblaster Live Value card using just a 1/8" cable. It's not pure digital optical transfer of information, but depending on your purposes it may do the trick. I just run it from the headphone jack of the minidisc player to the line in of the sound card.

To my knowledge, current Sony minidisc walkmans are not capable of transferring data out through a digital connection. They only have a digital in jack. Quite frustrating, although I have wondered if I would really hear a difference if I could transfer the data to my hard drive digitally. Currently my recordings themselves are not that sophisticated, although I do use a shure SM-58.

Hope this helps!
