This mic/micpre combination thing is all in context with the sound source. So anyone telling you how a certain equipment is best isn't really telling you the truth.
As an example, I have a rather soft baritone voice. I've found BLUE BlueBerry to help brighten it up, but this mic can make it too harsh and brittle at times. If I use
Avalon VT737SP and use its EQ, I can come out sounding pretty decent. And a silver face UREI1176 as a compressor behind Avalon can make me sound smooth and big like Chef from SouthPark. Yeah baby.
But sometimes, using just a VTB-1 instead of all that gear leaves out enough bottom and softens upper middle. It doesn't sound as big nor smooth, but it can be just the
right thing sometimes.
Would you get the same results on your own voice in your own room? No. But would another combination work for you? Yeah, sure. Would anyone be able to just tell you what that combination is? Nah, don't think so.
So I suggest you spend part of that money and get a decent all-around equipment at first. Like a decent dynamic, LD, SD mics, a decent outboard pre/comp/EQ and/or all-in-one box. Then learn all that stuff thoroughly and go from there.
An excellent place to get info is at
www.mercenary.com. I have no association with them. But I always found their website to be informative, and past postings by Fletcher educational and sometimes quite entertaining.
