Mic'n question

Considering that we can record acoustic guitars through Mic's, wouldn't it be possible to record electric guitars also through Mic'n at relatively low volumes?

Reason I ask is, I live in an apartment and just ordered a 15W tube amp. And like to know if it's possible to record at pretty low volumes without getting arrested or evicted.

You mean record the guitar with a mic or record the amp at a low volume with the mic?

If you mean the amp at a low volume, then yes.

If you mean the guitar itself, then yes, but it will be odd sounding IMO.

Get a Shure SM57 for a dynamic mic that has been used on thousands of professional albums and is very versitile, or search around for a condensor mic that will work good. The condensor will probably work a lot better at low volumes because dynamics can sometimes need a bit more signal to get the most out of them. But with a condensor you need phantom power.


But the way, is this 15watt amp by chance a UniValve? Where'd you get it at if you don't mind me asking?

I meant mic'n the Amp ofcourse! And yes it is a Univalve. You guessed correct, good job. Anyawy- so seems like it should be OK to record this at low volumes? I will be using 2x12 Mesa cabs with the amp.

Also, when I do get the Shure-57 mic, do you think I will beed a pre-amp? I think my Yamaha AW4416 has a good built in preamp. Any thoughts? Also, I think the AW4416 does have phantom power.

Dynamic mics tend to have a higher noise floor than condensors. So if you are recording at a low volume, the condensor might give better (cleaner) results.

The pres on the Yamaha should be fine.

Do you have any recommendations for a condensor Mic? I am totally new to mic'n.

As a curiousity for me- do you know the dynamic range for both types of mic's?

I would post a question in the mic forum. There are people over there that have used a lot more mics than I have.

The Audio Technica AT4033 seems to be a favorite condensor on electric guitar. You can probably snag one off ebay for under $200.
