Hello, I am new to recording and I have just started recording onto my computer which is a PC. (as I advance I am looking to expand and upgrade my gear, finances permitting).
Anyway I am making kinda abstract electronic music mostly using analogue synths (Roland Juno 6, Moog Prodigy etc). I was just wondering what the deal was with micing these up and recording them onto my PC. Most people suggest DI'ing them but i was wondering if micing them would be worth it and lend itself to creating a diferent sound. Less immediate and more subtle than DI'ing. and if it is worth it, what kinda of mics should i use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the board and look forward to many great discussions with you all.

Thanks in advance,

Capturing a good keyboard sound is not as trivial as it sounds. If you are used to hearing your keyboard through a keyboard amp or built in speakers, the sound of a DI recoding is going to be VERY different. I'm not saying better or worse, just different. If the DI sounds too sterile, or "In your face", you can experiment with micing, as well as running the DI signal through different pre-amps. I sometimes run the keyboard (organ patch) into a slightly distorted guitar amp and mic the amp.
As for mics suitable for the job, any old SM-57 or any other good dynamic microphone would be just fine. Play with it, and see what yoy can come up with.
