Hi- in my experience (or lack thereof)- an SM57 delivers a very upfront, crisp type of sound.

My question is, what other mics are out there that will deliver a warm, "make ya feel like you're in the room with the amp" type of sound?

What type of technique can I use to achieve the sound I am looking for?

A single mike will probably not give you what you're looking for.
The "full sound" is a combination of direct and ambient sound, so more mikes are needed.
If you stick one ear (not recomended though) in the position where the mike is, you will hear the amp just as bad as it sounds from the mike......
So i guess... add some ambience or distance mike with some DI blended in might also work...

What mic would you say is good for distant mic'ing? Also- what specs determine what a mic is good for? How do I read them?

Thanks. I tried doing a search on the site, but it keeps "timing out".

Hi
If you record hi-level guitar I would use a fairly cheep dynamic for close miking, at least if I have to use my own mikes.
For ambience a better mike in omni or eight depending on the room. Probably compress the ambience to get some pumping hi energy feel.
You could also use on mike in a more ambient position and add in some direct sound from a guitar effect box, with a slap echo on the direct and some reverb you can create a massive sound.
Maybe spread the ambience with a short delay.....

Don't get too hung up on spec's ... try different things and use your ears......
