I'm thinking of purchasing a two-track digital recorder (Boss BR864 - available June, 2003, I believe). One input appears to be for a mic (xlr or 1/4inch) and the other input is labeled "Guitar/Bass." Described as "Instrument/Hi-Z Instrument input."

I would like to know if I can use a second microphone with the "Guitar/Bass" input. In other words, I'm interested in recording with two microphones (sometimes) rather than being restricted to one mic and one instrument. Is it possible and have good results?

More Boss info...

Nominal Input Level
GUITAR/BASS : -24 dBu
MIC (Phone/XLR) : -44 dBu

Input Impedance
GUITAR/BASS : 1 M ohm
MIC (Phone/XLR) : 8.9 k ohm (HOT-COLD), 8.2 k ohm (HOT-GND, COLD-GND)

Thanks! Ed

You can plug a mic into a mic preamp and out of the preamp into a line input.

DJL,
Thanks! I was hoping that would be the option, if I couldn't connect directly. I appreciate the help. -- Ed

You can use a High Z mic or add a transformer to a low Z mic to use that input. Both of those options are pretty crappy compared to using an external pre like DJL recomends.

Tex,

Interesting. Good to know. I'm learning a lot. I should (and will) go through a lot more of the archives here. This place is great. Thanks! -- Ed
