hello everyone!
i'm kinda new to this site and i must say this is a real blessing for someone "just starting out" like me.
ok i'm doing some vocal recording into my computer in my bedroom. i live with my family of 5 so of course i don't want something too sensitive that will pick up someone walking through the house or something you know... but i want to get the best sound possible for my vocals. i was wondering if you guru's could make some suggestions to me on Mic's and mic gear for my setup. my budget for gear is around $200-500. thanks so much.....

Since you don't want anything but your vocals to be picked up, in an environment like that I would pretty much rule out a condensor. You may want to look into getting a decent large diaphragm dynamic like the SM7 or the EV RE-20. These have been used on lots of pro recordings for vocals. If you’re familiar with the last Wilco record (the one they made the movie about) he used an SM7 on many of the songs.

i would get a sm57 and a vtb-1 preamp(wait for the price drop).......

thats if house noise cant be controlled....if you can make yourself some type of soundtreated/isolation area, id go with a condenser mic like a Marshall MXLv67......

A used EV PL20 usually sells for about $75-100 less than the RE20, and is basically the same mike.
Other excellent dynamic microphones to consider and try;

Beyer M88TG or M88 (TG=Tour Group, is made "tougher")
Beyer Soundstar MKII (fuller/clearer than an SM58)
Beyer Soundstar X1N (similar to 421 below)
Sennheiser 421 (any other than MKII the current model)
Sennheiser 441 also called MD441
Peavey PVM 520i
Electro-Voice EV 635a
EV 308, 380, or 480 in the N/D series (sold as drum mikes but can
be excellent for vocals)

hey thanks!

wow thanks for all the info guys! awesome, i am definatly checkin all this out. you guys rock, thank you!

What mics would you recommend for recording acoustic guitar in the same sort of environment? Is there a good choice in a dynamic, or would an LDC or SDC be necessary? Is sensitivity to ambient noise as much of a consideration with an SDC as with an LDC?

Thanks
