Mackie sr 24-4 vs 24-8bus for front end

I am currently using a Mackie Sr24-4 for the front end of my pro tools set up. I am basically just using the sr24 for the preamps but it is sometimes too hot and I get mic overload on some condensers I use for drums. There are no -20db pads on this console.

My question is:
If I upgraded to the Mackie 8bus console, would I be able to use the direct outs to compensate for this problem? I think there are direct outs on all 24 channels on the 8bus. I think there are pads on the console also.

I am trying to avoid buying semi-expensive preamps for my set up.

I know you don't want to hear this word, BUT... you can use the Behringer DI-100 boxes to run your mics through. These boxes have two individual -20db pads to give you a total of -40db when both are engaged. This could save you some money from having to upgrade your board.

Are you clipping at the pre or the converter?
The 24-8 does have more recording friendly options but the pre's may or may not be different. Chech the specs, nominal, max input ranges for both. You may just be going sideways.

The preamps are not as hot on the 8 buss. The sr series stuff is infamous for it's preamps having too much gain.

Also, on the 8 buss, you can just turn the fader down. The direct outs are post fader.

But, at least on the 8 buss, the direct sends is post fader, so you can turn the fader down.

Are you sure Mackie preamps are the sound you want on a lot of tracks?

Well, to my ears, they are just a little uninteresting. I guess if you are happy with them, have at it.
