Bought a used 2009 27" iMac with 1TB drive and 16gig RAM. Bought a Apogee Duet 2 and about to install Logic Studio. I'm new to the concept of home recording in general let alone Logic. Are there any plug-ins software you could recommend for R&B/Jazz/Rock applications? Will I need an external drive for my projects?

Yes you should have multiple drives. Best setup for ANY daw is:

OS, apps and plugins on boot drive
Sample libraries on second drive
Audio tracks and projects on third drive.

My setup is:

iMac -- fw800 port---> Glyph samples drive ----> Glyph project drive ---> Motu828mkII

You want the samples and tracks on their own drives so that any housekeeping on the OS drive does not stop the smooth streaming of data.

Welcome to the world of digital recording! :)
Tim is absolutely correct - recording onto the same HD as your OS can result in a much slower system. Definitely go Firewire 800 external HD if the computer has this protocol.
And to follow up with your other question don't go buying any plugins until you understand what you're doing with editing & mixing using Logic's built-in suite. They are perfectly suitable for what you are wanting to do. You'd be better off researching tips & tricks for how to set up a basic recording, how to use compressors, eq, etc so that you can get your head around what you are seeing in your DAW once the audio is recorded.

Best wishes
