Hey folks, sorry if I'm hogging valuable space here, but I just finished the first mix of "Chrysalis" v2 with Lt. Bob's very nice horns. He laid down 7 horn parts that are generally mixed and split into 2 sections. I didn't EQ them at all, as I thought the recorded tone was beautiful. But if anyone has any suggestions there, by all means. This is my first horn mix.
I also removed all the original acoustic guitars and replaced them with 1 stereo acoustic part. The lead vocal was re-recorded yesterday to sit in the mix better (hopefully).
I don't care for what the LAME mp3 did to it though. Usually it's pretty good, but this one seems to have lost something. Shouldn't be too too bad though. I kept the bitrate low to help 56k's. Should I start posting 2 mp3's (for longer pieces) to accomodate both broadband and dialup?
Anyway, have a listen if you got the time.

At 9.6 MB this still may be tough for the 56k people.

Nice job on the horns. If they sound great to start that makes the mix easier. IMVHO they could come up a tad. However, in a tune with dynamics like this it would probably throw the whole thing.
You really take alot of instruments and sounds and blend them well. This is a top notch mix that took me through the different parts of this tune like a road trip!
Your vox are unique. This tune is really original!

Wow! Very cool indeed. I love the meter. Good harmonies. I wanted the horns just a little bit louder. Great sax solo around 6:00 or so. The cool factor on this tune is way off the scale.
 
the new vocals sound great.. the whole mix sounds excellent except a few little parts like the high hat sound @ 4:38, and @ 4:54 etc.. when ever those parts come, that high hat is distracting because it gets too loud, but only for a short time in those few parts.. It happens whenever those parts come.. that was the only thing that bothered me, but I'm sure I'm being extremely picky, and looking to break your chops.. :) Everything sounds great and it is an awesome tune and recording.. Kick ass solo by Lt. Bob!

I know I'll probably be shot for saying this, and I mean no disrespect towards my friend Lt. Bob, but I didn't like the sax addition.. It was played great and recorded well, but I thought it was a needless addition, and I'm glad you kept it low.. Although I can see why you would want it, and that's just *my* preference.. I'm sure that sounds like blasphemy, but I hope it's not taken that way..

I really liked it a lot overall.. The vocals and new guitar sound are great..

Very good song.

It took me back to the 60's & 70s for sure.
I've always loved those long songs that break things up and keep the interest flowing.
Your song does just that.

Lt's horns was like the tabasco on a fine meal.

This is my favorite tune of yours, Mr. Sluice. I love the discordant sax parts in the outro...I don't love the sax in the intro...it just seems like too much too soon. This is a pretty dynamic song, and I just think it'd sound better to save it until 1:20. I like the horns in their "subtle" state throughout. Horns are tough to mix, but the Lieutenant's prowess makes it much easier, doesn't it? AND THE DRUMS SOUND GREAT!!! ;)

I have a few versions of this tune on my harddrive, and it has been great to hear the song progress; your vocal seems to sit really well in this version. Better than nice job.

This is some SERIOUSLY CREATIVE STUFF! Almost got a psycho dave mathews feel to it. The recording and musicanship top of the line. Thx for sharing it. I cant find anythng wrong with it. Damn, got to hear it again...

Hey Tom,
.......when I first heard LT. was putting sax on this, I went back to give the song another listen. ......and i thought to myself, ...damn...... wheres he gonna put it? I think this would be a tough song for anyone to add an additional instrument to because it is already so complete. I would like to hear the horns louder to see if they can create their own space, but I think if you bring their levels up, youre gonna have to gut their high mids. I would like to hear that just for kicks, because i like the sax parts that were added..... Im not sure if the sax is conducive to the best end result of the song........ but all of the fine work involved makes it well worth experimenting with.

........I liked the freaky free-style sax solo towards the end, and I really dug the guits..........

Regarding the LAME encoder, I noticed a wierd pulsing on the last thing i recorded w/ it. I heard the same thing on the last project i submitted to the forum but wasnt sure 'cause it (Lame)was new to me. .....I think im going back to a straight 256. Filesize is managable.......and no funny business.

Hey guys, I only have a minute then I gotta get ready for the Halloween party I'm hosting. But I wanted to say thanks for the listens. Lt. Bob hasn't heard this yet, so he may have some suggestions for the mix from a horn man's perspective...probably something like "turn them up" :D
He had asked a while ago about doing some horns for me on something. I thought this would be neat with horns in some parts here and there, and he sent me 7 tracks of em! And they're great parts. But I agree it's like putting whipped cream on the frosting (you can use that if ya want). I may try a mix with no synths and see how it sounds sometime soon. This was one HELL of a challenge, but it was fun. And he is a helluva musician to have even come up with horn ideas for this madness. And I know everyone probably agrees on that. I'm hoping to do more work with him on some less produced tunes where he can shine. I kept the horns tamed on this for what are probably obvious reasons. Too much sent it out of control. I tried them at raised levels, EQ scoops on the gits, probably everything. And ultimately I used them as garnish, so to speak. I'm really looking forward to working with him again because he's fucking great to work with!

it rocked before pretty hard before, now it REALLY friggin' rocks.....

props to the Lt. for being able to come up with any horn lines that fit into this epic.....double props for coming up with the PERFECT parts.....

the mix sounds fine....part of me wanted the horn parts up a tad more, but it sounds fine as is.....

whoa! It's like a whole new song... wasn't expecting THAT type of horn arrangement -- was expecting more of the "soloing" type...

...are you training your voice with Guernica? :D Seriously Tom, it sounds like you're doing the Roger Love vocal training... you're getting some lower resonance, and getting away from the nasally stuff... these vox rock...

Mix sounds a bit more boomy than the original mix, but the vox are more steady in level.... and a lot more clear...

There's a lot of stuff going on in this thing... maybe you could try some of what I'm attempting on a new mix? Send some tracks to a subgroup, and set up some RealVerb or TrueVerb there to push some tracks back in the mix... for some depth; a really busy mix might benefit (just a thought...)

I'm liking this version, in a totally different way than the other. hope you don't mind if I keep both... both are just as good, but the Lt. sure put some nice saxyness in there....

...hmmm... intuition says there's a conflict between the stereo acoustic and bass sound... some overlap around 150??

A wild outro, just like the other version.... preference, MIXWISE, was the first one... it just had a tighter mix (this one seems a bit dry?? :confused: )

... but preference ARRANGEMENT-wise goes to this one... it's got more sh&t going on :cool: Tom, you kick ass.

I thought the song was superb....the playing, performing...etc.. all just great. Nice production too. It does get a little "thick" at times with all the instrumentation it seems...but you are pulling it off better than just about anyone here.

my only suggestions/dislikes where that the kick seemed pretty dominant in some places, and the mix was heavy in low end sounds, with the vocals and the occasional snare hits providing the only high end.(basically in the beginning, before the slow up/synth stuff around 1:40) You weren't really getting much from the ac. gtrs for the high end either....or the cymbals?..for that matter. However, that said, it does sound good, so what does it really matter anyway?:rolleyes:

I thought the horns are where they should be volume-wize..

and the make-you-jump- in -your-seat guitar strums at the end...you know...which ones... I like that stuff.
 
I thought this was a pretty damn good recording overall. I liked: the acoustic tone, the vocal, the overall drum placement--a couple spots they got too buried for my ear, that perfect synth which added some high atmosphere, and of course the saxes.

I definitely wanted the sax up more for the wild solo. The acoustics were louder than the solo, which didn't quite make sense to me, from a mixing point of view. Thats probably something you ran up against due to the thickness of all the parts. The more there is, the harder it is to find the sweet spot to feature a solo, etc.

I also wondered after hearing the mix, if 9 sax tracks were too much, since they were mixed "back there" for most of the recording. I think I might have stripped it down to two parts in fifths to give the saxes more definition in the mix. A less is more approach.

Still, SliuCe, this is an excellent effort and I mean to take nothing away from what you've done. All the above comments are just fine tooth comb nitpicking. This is a song I want to download and listen to for a while 'cause its so multi-layered and has some lyrics that invite diving into. Definitely not something I could know inside and out after a couple of listens. It demands something from the listener, unlike my simple three chord shit!:D I'd give you five stars, but you already got 'em and they won't give ten!
 
I love when the writers color outside the lines tastefully, which yall did. the math and the timing mix was superb. hat`s off to "horny" Bob :) I want your bass drum! The guitar handling is nice indeed.

Breath taking:eek: . Good lordy, Omy..man this is so killer. Man i love this place, i get so humbled every time I listen to all these great tunes. I haven't ever heard anything like this before, and i thought i'd heard it all.

You guy's did a heads up job...just fantastic!
