i've been reading threads and trying to improve my guitar recordings...
so this time i tried using a 990 facing the neck meeting the body of the guitar...this is what i ended up gettting

www.myspace.com/earthandpoets (listen to "fingers crossed")

its really not the best you'll ever hear....but could you guys just give me tips on how to make it sound better?

I like the song.

Guitar doesn't sound bad to me, and I'm real picky about acoustic guitar sounds. Maybe a little too much low end on some notes that sounds kind of muddy. I'd try keeping the mic in the same spot, but angle or point it away from the direction of the soundhole a little. For this song anyway.

But MySpace destroys the quality of music so maybe upload it to another site. Like www.lightningmp3.com, with a 192 KBPS MP3.

It sounds pretty good, actually. If anything it could use maybe little clarity in the highs. But it does not sound bad, at least on these desk top speakers I have here at work.

I think what dannny guitar was telling you, is that you want to point the mic AWAY from the sound hole, at the neck of the guitar.

If you play around with positioning a little, you can minimize the vocal bleed in the guitar mic, which will give you a little more freedom to eq, etc. on the guitar track.

How did you EQ the guitar track you have?

Yup. :p ;)

Don't post music on Myspace if you want people to judge the recording quality. Their file compression sounds like crap and recently they've added a bass boost just to make things worse.

well that gay..i guess ill get a soundclick or something..

To be honest, it's going to be tough to get that full professional sound you're hearing in your head with a $100 chinese large condensor mic. You may want to try:

1. position the mic over your right shoulder by your ear
2. reposition the mic at the soundhole but 45 degrees or so toward the frets

As an FYI, many engineers use small condensor mics for acoustic guitar as small condensors tend to be more...sparkly (for a lack of a better term). Since you use the MXL line, I've heard the MXL 603/604/991 are very inexpensive and decent small condensor mics. My understanding is there are several manufacturers who, like MXL, by these mics from the same chinese factory and slap their own name on them (like MXL).

Good luck!

You know, all in all, it's very nice. I do detect some low freq rumble throughout. Not sure if it's in your bass track, sounds like something needs to have a little noise gate action.

Go back and play/listen to each track seperately and turn it up.

I like it...especially the vocals. I think a touch of parametric EQ on guitar would be helpful, it sounds a tad bottom heavy.

Nice, I enjoyed listening to it.

Yeah, MySpace is terrible for playback quality.

lightningmp3.com is good. If you put up a 320 kbps mp3 it's pretty much like hearing the orig wav file. Less than 192 and the sound can be misleading.

About advice in the thread about how to position the mike... no one can tell you that unless they're there in the room with you while recording. Too many variables... instrument, player's technique, room resonances... What works in one situation doesn't work in another. Oh, and the 990 has a 20mm capsule... it's a small diaphragm mike (or medium depending on your terminology). The fact that it's side address often makes people think it's a LDC.

I had a 990. Man, that's one bright mike. Though some like it, I found it to be too edgy. There are many better mikes IMHO for ac gtr - some that even cost less.
