I walk the line
There's a great deal on a Jazz bass here, but the fret ends feel like the board's dried out some, but it's on a bound maple board with a gloss finish.

Is this something that rehumidification might fix, or would it be something more serious? Kinda hard to file fret ends on a bound board, isnt it?

Once the binding and f/b has shrunk leaving a smidge of fret over the edge no amount of re humidifying will correct it. Wood just isn't as forgiving as that and the fret tang has also found a new place to sit. You'll need to get them stoned flush and polished once you have the thing humidified correctly and the whole thing stable. And yes it is a tricky job that is best done by some one with a feel for it. It requires both carefully filing them flush and also re polishing/burnishing if required. One reason why I'm not a great fan of lacquered f/b's.

Crap. I was afraid of that. :(

Thanks for the info.

What Muttley said. That said, dressing fret ends is not that expensive. Unless you are talking about a very inexpensive instrument, it probably shouldn't be enough for you not to buy it.

The thing that flagged me a litle was the "bound maple" they can be a bit more of a pain than others. Having said that it wouldn't stop be buying it and having it done. I'd charge in the region of £30 - £40 to dress the fret ends and check set it up. Whats that $50 dollars ball park.

Closer to $60-70.

Well, that's different!

I thought dressing the ends would be prohibitively expensive because of it being a bound board.

Now I have to see if they still have it.

Dressing bound fingerboards is not that much harder. It's only when you have to refret them that they are much different.
