Alright, I'm thinking of buying a Layla 24 (any suggestions?) because it has enough inputs/outputs, midi, & digital in/outs. The question is will running my mic through a mic pre, then converting the XLR to the 1/4" affect the sound quality, or is this what everyone is doing? Would I get better sounding (quality wise) vocals with an external mixer, or would the extra conversion from the mixer to the soundcard just counteract it?

Thanks
Steve

Which of the digital I/O will you actualy need/use?
1/4" balanced is fine.
I'm a new subscriber to the belief that a "hardware" mixer, while cool looking and tangible (touchable) and a lot less hassle than using a mouse, is essentially a waste of money that would be better spent on quality mics and pres. Another issue is that of signal deprevation as you mentioned. Software mixer eliminates two paths of signal in and out susceptable to becoming colored or degraded.

I just bought the Omni Studio after months of questions and spec comparisons. 6 ins/outs, 2 pres, 96/24 for $389.

Check it out.

So the omnistudio replaces the breakout box on the Delta66 or 44 right, or does it add extra inputs through USB so you can use both the breakout box & the USB?

How is the USB interface do recordings ever come out of sync?

If the outputs don't combine to make more than 6 ins then I'm in trouble. We have 3 dj's who each use two inputs (for stereo), a keyboard player (another 2), that would be it with 6 inputs. There would be no room for mics. Currently the most inputs we've used at once is 5, cus all the DJ's go in mono, plus 2 mics, but I'd like to change that.

I really like the inserts on each channel though, are there other systems/cards that do this as well?

I'm going to research the omnistudio more though, plus the Delta 1010, Layla 24, and the Protools digi101. I don't really want the pro tools right now since I'm already familar with software that I've been using for a couple years.
