King of Bling
This is the last CD I'll be able to do with my daughter because she's gonna' graduate and go off to whatever life and college bring her. I got a new mic a few weeks ago, and I'm trying stuff out.

I think I'm gonna' retrack the muddy bass with an acoustic. Any thoughts appreciated.

I always love your and Jaimee's work.

It is a shame to be recording a LAST album.
That being said it sounds good to me.
My speakers are buzzing a little on some of the low end stuff, but it is my crappy computer speakers I'm sure. I need to bring it out to the studio for a good listen.

Any thing I can can do to help you guys let me know!

Tom

Sounds pretty dang good over here. I think the rumbling is probably just from the low string on the acoustic guitar. They can turn out pretty bassy sometimes. I usually cut around 100hz on most guitar tracks to get rid of any bad rumble sound.

Just for the record though, my speakers aren't crackling, I have a sub though which isn't getting to much power from anything here.

i really like it
she sounds amazing
i like the guitar too:)

No, I don't think it is. I recorded it with a horrible bass and compressed the crap out of it, but it's still too hot in the 125-250 region, I think. I'm going to try to record it with an acoustic bass today. It may be worse, lol. We're still trying to figure out a time to come bug ya'...we're both looking forward to it.

I appreciate the listen and the thoughtful response. You're right about the guitar...I actually detuned the low string on the acoustic to a "C" because I wasn't planning on adding a bass to this. The bass doesn't come in until the vocal starts, but you can hear a "bass-like" quality on the acoustic, lol. I need to retrack the bass with an acoustic and see if it helps. Thanks again for listening.

Thanks a lot for listening.

Cool tune man...a bit too much low end maybe, but the vibe is great. Tame the lows, and it's good to go...vocals seem to be sitting pretty, and the acoustic carries that portion well.

Nicely done man...

Sounds really great, the first thing that that I noticed though is I thought my right speaker wasn't working for far to long(well not really but it was a little err different) once the rest comes in things balance out well though.

Monkeymanx has it; cut between 60Hz and 125Hz in a narrow band till you find that low resonance and get it under control...

What a lovely tune, so bittersweet, I hate that word "last", as in "this is the last..." :(

Go, Chris and Jamiee!

Chris I am not getting the low rumble but my events tend to lack bass. I don't know if it is a style thing but the left side seemed too "heavy" instrument wise. Especially when the faster shaker comes in under the "keep on moving" lyrics. My ears kept getting pulled to that one side. Not sure if it is really bad, just different.

I suspect this won't be the last we hear from Jamiee!

Oh I dunno bout that Chris.

Was the bass with the Fender Bronco? How'd you mic that acoustic? I always get a bit of a low end boom when I use an LDC. I like to get up close with the Naiants, it solves the whole proximity effect problem. Nice strings, what were they done with?

It's a beautiful song. I take it you did the instrumentation?

Awesome...I thought this thread was on page 200 by now.

Ok, your comments have inspired me to take another crack at it. I'm going to put up a mix with the acoustic bass and hopefully the balance issue can be resolved.

I'll respond in more detail in a couple of hours when I'm done.

In addition to some sort of new gear, I'm battling some other demons...like I just took all the carpet out of my house and relocated my monitors and everything sounds different, lol.

Thanks...I'll blather on more later.

Don't say last. This is very good. This is an enjoyable song. Catchy, meaningful. So much on par with Taylor Swift in singing, playing, arrangement, etc. The voice is more mature sounding which is different but good on the same level. The song still has it's own identity.

Didn't hear the bass problem

The Taylor comment is a compliment as I'm a fan.

Ok, I updated the link in my first post. Never tried tracking an acoustic bass before, and I can't tell if it helped or if it's just a different kind of mud, lol.

I moved the shaker over to the right...did some other stuff

You know how when you're adding or mixing one element, you tend to mix it kinda' loud? I think I did that with the bass. I also compressed the living hell out of it, so if it sounds tortured, it really is.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, and thanks a lot for listening. I have to take my kid to a basketball game, but I'll bore you all to tears with some replies later.

Good stuff Chris, really enjoy what you and your daughter do. Has a very lonesome sound and that is fitting with the tone of the lyrics, very well performed and executed.....I did think for a minute though that the shaker was pick noise on the guitar. I still say that you guys sound a lot like Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer.....here's a link:D

Sound better, I know panning is a personal thing, I would pan the picking guit to the right opposite the strumming, wil give the bass a little more room.

lol...I thought I had, but I went back and looked and the picking git was a lot further right than the strumming git...I did my best to balance them on the new mix that I just uploaded. Thanks for the ears.

Go, Chris and Jamiee!

I appreciate the post a lot, Llarion. It's definitely bittersweet, but it's gonna' be (almost as much) fun to watch her grow as a singer and a writer when she's on her own. Thanks again.

Thanks wireneck...you weren't alone, lol. I moved the shaker over to the right and worked on the balance a bit...well, and I retracked the bass to try to clear up the mud and give more real estate to the middle of the mix. I appreciate your time. How's it going? Haven't seen you in forever.

Thanks for listening. Yeah, the version you listened to was done with that P.O.S. bass, lol. The current mix was done with an acoustic bass...I'm not sold on it yet, but I like it better than what was there. I mic'd the acoustics with an AT4050...recently cut them in the mud region a tad...don't know if it helped yet or not. :D - As for the strings, that's my daughter playing her viola. I did the gits and bass and (*gulp*) shaker. I'm trying hard not to "cheat" on anything with this record...I want it simple, acoustic...no drums...as honest as I can get it. This track is more of a practice run, so I appreciate the input a lot.

I appreciate the comments a lot. They're the same age. :D

Going to listen now, and thanks as always for your words and attitude.
