Is it me or does MOTU suck?

I don't want to base all my opions on a piece of hardware I bought off of ebay. BUT IMHO my 1212M card sounds way better than this thing. I tried Syncing it to a Apogee Rosetta and had all kinds of wierd noises (yes I made sure it was setup properly). Reinstalled the old 1212m and BAM I got a wonderful sound and all my problems went away.

I guess that's a true testiment for a card that goes for 100.00 bucks now. Now if only they would do something about that damned Patchmix Software used to run the card.

It's probably not you.

Of course, not everything MOTU makes sucks (896HD and Traveler come to mind as very good pieces)

I personally wouldn't invest in anything else that had the MOTU logo on it though. YMMV

Oh I guess I should tell you all what MOTU it is... It's the 2408mkII pci version.

I run the 2408 mkII and I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. I have it clocked with a GenX6 and it sounds great. This compared to the many cards I've used over the years (Gina, Digi001, Pulsar, Yamaha DSP factory, etc).

Hmm I want to give it another shot just so I get the extra ins and outs but after a week or so banging my head trying to figure out what the deal was. I though I was hooking something up wrong or the apogee was the culprit cosidering the motu sounded fine when it wasn't receiving wordclock from the rosetta. Maybe the drivers are conflicting I'm not sure.

Yikes! Well good luck. The 2408mkII with the PCI-324 card was the piece that got me despising MOTU in the first place actually.

A friend had it installed in his studio and had no end to his problems (pops, clicks, etc). Kept calling me to help him troubleshoot and my answer was always "replace that POS with something better".

He didn't believe the MOTU was the problem until he finally broke down and bought an RME box. As if by magic, all his problems vanished.

If you are using the 324 card, that is from 5 years ago. You are going to run into all kinds of problems. I use the 24i/o with the 424 card for a couple years with no problems.

There very well could be a problem with your unit syncing properly with an external clock via a digital connection. There could ALSO be a problem with the word clock being outputted from the Rosetta! Who knows. Unless you have another Apogee sitting around, or another 2408, it is hard to nail it down.

I never had any clocking problems with my old 2408, but the drivers sure sucked!

MOTU is an iffy company. If your stuff works, it generally works quite well. When it doesn't work, it probably never will with your current configuration. The problem is, it is never really clear WHAT you will need to change in your current configuration to "fix" it.

Fuck it! By RME! :) FEW people have problems with RME products, and their support is top notch!

The PCI 324 definately was very picky about compatibility issues and such. I got rid of my 2408 and made the switch to RME years ago. However, when the 2408 was up and working properly it was great and offered a lot of bang for the buck.

hands down my MOTU 1224 and PCI-324 were pieces of SHIT when it came to using windows. Fuck Motu and their Mac happy attitude. That shit burned up in the fire. Only piece I didn't mind seeing go... just hope I get the money to buy something else.

From what I've seen, their newer stuff is good gear, robust, relatively inexpensive, etc. Some of their older PCI stuff, as you have found, could be rather temperamental.

I have a 424pcix w/ 24i and 2408. And I love them, never a problem.

I've been running two 2408mkII's on the 324 card for 5 years without a single problem and they have run on two different computers. Hope I'm not cursing myself writing this message:)

Just be cautious when upgrading. I had two different computers that my MOTU ran just fine on and one that it would not at all. The worst part is MOTU's technical support. They were the worst I have EVER dealt with. It was however a blessing in disguise though because 4 years ago it prompted me to switch to RME which I am VERY glad I did. I can not tell you about RME's tech support though because in this whole time I have never had a reason to call them. I guess I could call them though next time I am bored and see if they want to chat:D

You're not. I've had mine in 5 different computers. The ONLY one that was a no go was a Dell Dimension that I bought at a garage sale. It wouldn't play nice there but I but I blame the Dell.
