I don't know what tuning in particular, but its a pretty low open tuning for a lot of the songs. It probably changes depending on the song. There's a lot of banjo in there too, so it could be something related to open G...that's where I would start.
Yeah, I fell in love with Sam Beam's music the first time I heard it. Not bad for being recorded on a 8-track in his living room, eh? I haven't heard his most recent one "Our Endless Numbered Days", but I heard that he actually went into a studio to do it.

Dude, go get it today! You won't regret it. Yeah, it is definitely more "polished" sounding than his prior stuff, but the songs remain excellent.

that cd is amazing, one of my favs. Naked as We Came still amazes me every day. Does anyone know about any rocky votolato tuning either?

I don't know for certain, but I played "Love and some verses" at a friend's wedding last summer and I think I just used a capo at the 2nd fret (or 3rd, I can't remember...I am away from my guitar right now) in standard tuning. I think "Muddy Hymnal" is standard tuning. "Upward over the mountain" can be played in standard, as well. "Bird stealing bread," I think, is capo at 3 or 4. Those are all the ones I've tried to figure out.
