how do you install pickups on the electric guitar?

very carefully.

You unscrew them from the pick guard or bezel. Desolder the wires from what ever they are attached to. Take the new pickups and solder the wires to where the old ones were attatched. Screw them to what the old ones were screwed to.

If they are EMG active pickups take it to a tech :) I recently installed some and while they work just fine I would consider installing them to be a little challenging for the newbie.

what kind of pickups and what are you trying to accomplish but changing them? Are you going to a hotter pickup? how many connections are there on the new P/U? If you wire them wrong they will sound like ASS!!! If the coils are setup for coil tapping and you reverse the current, you can make a Les Paul sound like a sitar.
I specialize in this, sorry to freak you out.
And yes, if they are active and you are putting in a preamp or are going to a double coil from single and require routing, have a shop do it. It is entirely too easy to render your guitar unusable if you start routing.
So, what do you got?

I am going from single coil to a double coil in the bridge.

If you are going to have to route the guitar, pay someone who knows what they are doing. The wiring is very simple, it hooks up the same way as the single coil. (read the directions to find out how to defeat the coil tap) Other than that, you just need the right pickguard/bezel for the situation.
