Is the beta 52 a must have in the studio or sre there alternatives? Give me some of your preferences for the kick drum. I'm hopeing not to sink in much more than the 52 costs. I like mics with mulitiple uses. Makes my wallet and my wife happy!

for cheap bass drum miking - AT ATMPRO25

for versatile with many other uses - Sennheiser MD421

All the above suggestions are good ones. I personally likeAKG D-112's. The kick drum itself has a bigger effect on the overall sound than the mic though.

It's twice the cost of the Beta-52.

My 52 didn't shine on kick drum until I put a head on the front of the drum with a 4" hole in it. Of course my inexperience could be a factor:) - but I like it. I talked them down to $150 from $169 at GC.

Gidge, have you tried the 421 on vocals? I feel like I'm wasting mine just using it on floor tom. (I did mic my bass amp with it once with good results)

AKG D112 is good on kick and bass, as well as guitar cab.-Richie
