Hey everyone,
My band and I have been trying to record our stuff but we cant afford any fancy recording equpmetn or stuff...were a basement band and we wanna find a way to record our stuff and put it to an mp3 format....any tips?

Er... ever think about going to a studio?

What exactly do you want to do with the recording... simply a demo?? Impress your friends and family??? Get girls????? Trying to get signed by a label?????

Depending on what you want out of the recording will dictate whether you can get away with throwing a boombox with a mic in your rehearsal space, or if you need to cut tracks in a studio....!

well we just want to get a couple songs done...but not like professionaly like in a studio cuz we dont have the cash....we just want to be heard and stuff...like on the net and stuff...just for our simple purposes...nothing major

we tried the boombox but it came out garbage...that why we want some tips for recoding and stuff

Well - if the boombox "budget" solution didn't cut it, then you're going to have to spring for some basic recording gear (at a 4-tracker)......... you'll also need at least a pair of decent mics, cables, probably a dual channel preamp....

It's kinda tough to record if you don't have at least the most basic essentials!

The very basics to make a crappy recording would cost you about $3-500. For that you could have a day or more in many studios.

i agree.

for 200 bucks I'd give you a 5 song EP gaurantee satisfaction ;)

that's just the whore that I am....there are many like me, with 20 grand worth of crap in our basements....seek us out.

Yeah, where are you at? If you are close to someone that reads this you might get a generous offer. If you are near Ky I'll get you 3-5 songs for about $200, well mixed, IF, thats a big if, I like your stuff.
Dont be a turd and post where you live.

i live in the richmond hill area of ontario
how much, on average, is a decent studio recording of lets say 3-4 songs?

well i would suggest just going to radio shack, and buying a microphone for 20 bucks...a tie clip on mic or something.

just plug that into your computer.

then get something like n-track (cheapest) and just do each track individualy.

thats how i started. no doubt here, it sounded pretty bad - but it completely killed any and all boombox or live recordings i had tried to do in the past.

or - get it done for real at a local studio. i'd try to find some home studio people around your city (i'm sure there are plenty...)

where you live at?

well, what we are thinking now is just to take this sony recorder (used for notetakeing and such) and we are just going to record us wherever it sounds the best. Then we are going to take the recordings and use some softwear (nero wave editor) to spice it up and make it an mp3 format... sound good?

EDIT: Sorry, i meant we are going to take the recordings and then record them to the computer with the software because we already have a computer mic

no no, the sony notetaker will be even worse. dependent on quality, it's expensive and time consuming to learn how to really record (and tons of fun). or you can just look up studios in the yellow pages or go see some indie bands and ask them where they recorded. a satisfactory five song demo shouldn't be more than $200... a meager sum for the satisfaction of hearing yourself recorded well.

yes...this is a big if. I heard tubedude threw a young lou reed out on his ass....

i started with 2 boom boxes. Recorded one track on one, played that back while recording another track on the second boom box and so on. it was crap but it was ok crap. If you work fast in the studio you could get away with $200 dollars.

Fuck that!

Drive down to Richmond , Va and record at Full Lumbar Support

150 per day! you can pet my cat!

Buying your own shit is a big waste of time

you should use mine!

shit man your 150 a day?!

My band is in Charlottesville about an hour away. we may come down, the cheapest i've seen here is $300 a day at pmd

They keyword is "stuff". You need to go out and buy good stuff, or go down the the AV lab at the high school and make the chief gnerd an offer he can't refuse. He will of course, want to record you for free and he has access to equipment. :)

I used to charge $150 a day block rate but bands would take advantage of that and try to squeeze as many tunes as they could get in ( I'd still have to edit and mix after everyone was gone so the one day would turn into three). Now I ask $100 per tune (unless I like you).:D

Axis, check your PMs

$150 does me all right for now. I do know what you mean TrackRat. I just tell them that a "day" is 8-10 hours. anything over that is $20/hour.

I still sort of feel bad about charging people though, not because the recording sucks but because I am so goddam nice! and good looking and rich!

It's the burdon we bare.:D

I demand blowjobs in return for recording....

Well..There is a rider in the contract that inflicts a $5.00 service fee on top of it per hour if the blowjobee has dentures....
