Hey, I have a project for my college recording class. I'm gonna be using a ribbon mic to record vocals and guitar in various different acoustic spaces. What do I need to know to do this?
A little background if you please:
Which mic?
Which guitar?
What sort of "acoustic spaces"?
What type of recording medium?
What other equipment is available?

•You don't need phantom power from the preamp for any ribbon mic except the new Royer 122. To be safe, make sure that phantom power is OFF, or a miswired cable could destroy your mic.
•Handle the mics very carefully - ribbons tend to be the most delicate of all designs. And NEVER let anyone blow into the mic, as that is a sure way to cause damage. On vocals, make sure you have a good pop-filter in place.
•Almost all ribbon mics are figure-of-eight patterns. On some sound sources you may want to try the back-side of the mic for a different colored sound. If you are looking to reject other sound in the room, remember that the null points will be 90 degrees to either side of the mic, not from the rear.
