How to slice and dice a segment

Dig this:
I record into n-track from a mindisc of our band rehearsal. I'd like to get short excerpts to post as MP3s. So I cut out 20 seconds of unwanted music/whatever at the beginning of a recording to get just the segment I want to post, but I'm left with a 20 second blank-no-music-no-nothing beginning. How do I move the music that remains to the beginning of the timeline?

Usually I like to solve these things by myself, but the help files are oblique about what should be a very basic editing techinque.

When you cut silence at the beginning of a .wav file, you can click on the destructive editing mode, which will eliminate completely the section you cut. Just don't forget to click back to non-destructive when you're done!
