recording direct and amped at same time? is that on two seperate tracks?

I also get alot of noise when I use the direct out XLR on my bass amp, how do I fix that?

Yep, two tracks, one for the DI and one for a mic on the amp. You may want to cloce mic the amp to avoid phasing issues.

What kind of bass amp? Some have a level control (output) for the DI, if yours does you might want to set the level to just above half (this works in most cases) to reduce noise and hum. You might want to try a different cable for the DI and check to be sure everything is grounded the same. You might also try moving away from other devices (amps, mixer, computer, monitor) if you have enough space. Sometimes electrical interferance will be heard on a DI even when you don't hear it through the amp speaker.

I do have a level control and I have tried adjusting it.

I'll look at moving further away. how do I check how everything is grounded?
what is "everything"?

how do you cloce mic the amp?

thanks

By close miking...I use a kick drum mic (either an AKG D112 or a Shure Beta 52) and put it up on the grill at the speaker. Move the mic around slowly as you're playing, closer to the center, away from the center out toward the edge...til you find the sweet spot.

I've also had good luck NOT close miking but backing the mic off a foot or so and moving it around til I find that fabled sweet spot. Good stuff is found in lots of places.
Experiment around. You'll get it.

Good luck man....
