How sensitive will a $100 condenser mic be?

Hey everyone,

I'm in the market for some condensers for a summer project. I'll be recording in a finished basement which has a quite surrounding.....except for two things....

1) There's a heater on the other side of the wall where I'd be recording. When it turns out, the square metal tubing it runs through expands out and makes a noise like if you shake a thin piece of metal. Then a consistent hum from the heater.

2) Footsteps from the 1st floor above, and light talking.

If I used something like the MXL 603 for guitar and another condenser for vocals (still trying to find a good one at the price for vocals) would it be a safe move?

Or would it be smarter to just go with a sm57 to record both guitar and vocals.

I'd go with the condensors and turn down the thermostat during recording and tell everyone to sit still. You will pick up ambient noises but how much just depends on the recording levels. The difference in sound between the condensors and the 57 is pretty major and I wouldn't really use a 57 on acoustic unless that was the particular sound that was needed.

Yep... what /\ said... go with the condensers; turn off the heat and send the kids upstairs to a movie.
