How much do you think I can haggle these down to?

Mics to get on my list:

2 SM57
1 SM58
2 MD421
1 Rode NT1A
2 Condensors (Rode NT5 or MXL 603)
1 Kick drum/Bass Cab (ND868 or AKG D112, RE30???)

Studio wise:
What I'm thinking is like this on drums, Snare (sm57), Tom Toms (2 MD421), Floor Tom (SM 57), Kick drum (Kick drum mic), Overheads (condensors), High Hat (SM 57).

But then I can use the 2 for stero Guitar micing, Rode NT1A for vocals, Condensors for Accustic, Kick drum mic for bass cab to make stereo with the Line in.

First off, do you think this is a good selection, secondly how much do you think I can haggle these down too if I got them all at once?

Thanks

I think your choices look pretty solid. If I were to make one suggestion, it would be that you look to buy a slightly higher end main vocal mic than the Rode. I think something like an AT 4050, 4047, or an AKG 414 would serve you better in the long run. I try to buy keeper mics, mics that I can use for a lifetime. With the exception of the Rode, I think all of your choices are keeper mics.

Why would you put the MD421's on the toms and a 57 on the floor tom? If you can.. get a second kick mic to put on the floor tom.

...

Sorry, I ment to say 58 on floor tom.

Ands its becuase I am on somewhat of a buget. Aside for bass drum and floor tom, what else am I going to use 2 bass mics for?

If theres a use I'll consider it, but I'm trying to get as much useability as I can out of every mic.

Brad, what do you think of the Rode K7 or Tube mic? Or how about blue's dragon fly? I was planing on getting one $1,000 mic, but you have to understand I'm sort of going from 0 to 50 on this in one jump, you know? The rode NT1A looks like a good mic for starters, maybe I'm wrong though.

oh say also, I see several different MD421 mics. there's the MD421-U, the MD421-U5, and the MD421 II.

What is the difference, which is better?

And what about the haggling? :)

Those designate the connector type on the mic. Otherwise they're all the same guts.

If your patient you should be able to snag the 57s for around $50 a piece used. The 58's normally don't go for much more. I don't have any idea about the others.

Mongoo, I can completely appreciate the need to get up and running. I certainly think that you can make good recordings with the NT1A. However, I just think that in another year, you'll probably want something a little better. I've heard good things about the new Rode K2, but I haven't used one.

Good luck.

I'd shoot for $650 and see what happens.

you may want to consider an audio technica pro-25 for the floor tom. i got mine off of ebay for a little under $50. pretty nice on kicks, floor toms, bass cabs, and i've even found use for mine on guitar. just something to consider.

I wouldn't fuss with all those Shures - get a 57 if you want the sound but don't bother with three ... the Sennheiser e835 are much more versatile IMHO and cheaper too. They seriously are a genuine alternative to 57/58s.

You can get the 57's from frontendaudio for $70 and shure has a $10 rebate.
$60 is a great price for a new 57. It is hard to get a used one on ebay for that price.

you should check ebay also.

the 57's shouldn't cost you more than 50 each (i actually found a beta57 for 65 on ebay)

you also might want to look into getting something other than a 57. i've heard good things about the sennheiser 835 (already mentioned). i have a senn e609s and i like it a lot.

i also have the NT1A and its a nice microphone. You might be able to find one on ebay for around 150.

unless you know someone who has all of these microphones that they are willing to sell you i would suggest hawking ebay for a few weeks. i've been doing it for the past 2 weeks and have added a few things to my collection (beta57a, senn e609s, mxl v67).
