Just got a new pre-amp. Universal Audio 2-610. Has balanced XLR inputs and outputs. Need to figure best way to incorporate it into my studio.

I have a Mackie 24/8 mixing console. MOTU 2408 and they are connected by a patch bay that allows me to patch in various outboard gear.

I have a number of synths patched into one patch bay that between them takes the full 24 channels and then some.

In a second patch bay there are the 8 bus returns/outputs from the Mackie normaled to the eight inputs of the 2408 and the 8 outputs from the 2408 normalled back to the first eight tape returns on the board. The remaining 8 channels on the patch bay have a dbx pre-amp anaolgue inputs and ouputs on two channels and six are unused.

In another rack there is an HHB compressor a Behringer compressor, an Aphex exciter, a Furman power conditioner, a Lexcion PCM 81, a Crown power amp and a TRS patch bay connected to the first sixteen channels of the mixer. The PCM 81 is hard wired to the first and second auxilary stereo sends and returns. The other devices are connected through the channels direct TRS input/output by patching them into the channels. The last eight channels are patched in if necessary by "floating" cables.

So, back to the original question, and that is...what is the best way to now connect the new preamp so that it is the most versatile. I need to be able to use the back XLR line inputs for the keyboards, the back mic XLR inputs for the mics and the fron High Z inputs for bass and guitar and all of the inputs and outputs need to be able to go to or come from anywhere?

What is my best move.

Only the preamp outputs should go to your patchbay. That will let you easily route the outputs to any particular mixer channel or tape track.

If you need to access the back inputs easily, what I use is a stage-type snake with a fan at one end connected to all my preamps and a box with XLR jacks at the other. If the UA is your only preamp, that might be overkill - you could always just have a couple of mic cords permanently plugged into the back, with the female ends brought out to the front for easy access. Maybe not the most elegant looking solution, but it will work.
