Hello, i'm new around here and new to the reel to reel recording aswell.
I have a fostex G16 and it has 16 mono inputs and 16 mono outputs.
I'm sure you will laugh when you hear my problem but for me it is a real problem so i'm going to ask it anyway, maybe some one can help me out.
Here's the thing: Me and my band want to record 5 different instruments at the same time on the fostex, it will take about 9 tracks. How do I hook it all up to the mixing tabel? My plan is to plug in all the instruments into the mixer but how can I connect the recorder to the mixer so it can put every channel on a different recording track? What does a mixer must have to do this ( 16 ins and outs???? ). I really dont have a clue!

Thanks

Sorry to be off topic, but it seems like everybody in the internet these days says "Me and my band" or "Me and my *insert group here*" and it is really starting to annoy me.

Your right, it should be "My band and I":D

Nevermind the previous post. Must be a "One man Band":p

I'm not sure what would be the best way to do what you want to do but I'm sure that someone here can help. You might also want to post this in the analog forum.

What sort of mixer do you have?

You'll need to have either direct outs or a sufficient number of busses to route each track to.

You could try to get a sniff from the insert point, but that would depend on a few things..

I agree, it would have to be a top end mixer at that. Most of the home recording models only have two sets of stereo outs, and that is it, in my experience (ain't saying much...)

Your right, but since my english is not that great, what is the right way to put it than?
Anyway, I have a few mixers that can not do the job, so I need something else. That's why I wanted to know how to set it up so I know what options the mixer must have.
Thanks, I will put it in the analoge section too

Plug straight into the recorder via individual preamps if needed.
Lucky LUCK you with that recorder.
Good luck with it.
& the analogue mob will set you right esp about what tape to buy etc.

One of the things I think it will come down to is how many tracks do you need to record at one time? All? 2? 3? 4? What I am getting at is, the number of tracks that you need to record at one time is the same number (at least) of busses that you will need.

Example. Lets say you want to do drums first. 4 tracks on that. Snare, kick, and 2 overheads. Record those 4 on tracks 1, 2, 3, & 4. Next, could track your bass. That only needs one so just record it onto track 5. Say 3 tracks for rhythm and lead guitars. Record those to tracks 6, 7, & 8. See where I'm going with this? You are able to use all 16 tracks of tape with this method with only a 4 buss console.

Hope this helps some.;)
