It seems really really weird that no one bothers to mention them or ask about them at all. Wonder why?
At the price some of them go for, it seems that they are damn near any homereccers dream come true, considering the quality, build, guts and history. Hell, the capsule in the UM70 is the Neumann U87 capsule I beleive, and you get the whole mic along with that Neumann smoothness for the same price as Neumann will charge for a new capsule itself.
I have been waiting for the Stephen Paul mic, but the wait is almost too long now, getting impatient. I might sell my TLM-103 and grab up a Gefell UM71 here soon.
Why not, ya know?

I thought that Gefell was a company that is more true to the Neumann than the current Neumanns because they are "old" Neumann folks? Ive Only seen 1 Gefell mic and it was at Guitar Center in the Jewelry case, It was cheap too, but not within my current budget. I would guess that the rarity of the mic make is an unknown contender or maybe the name is to high end sounding? Too many mics...so little time:D
Good question though.

I visited their booth at the Frankfurt fair, and they're really nice people, but really very very laid back. The mics look very neat. The specs aren't really impressive, but I guess that ties in with their mentality: they're a bit too honest and down to earth to invent fancy graphs and imaginary mesurements.

They really should do something in the promotional department. As they were out of German product folders, they gave me one in English. Some people just don't see the value of a good translator. The texts are really kind of funny. Inadvertadly so.

The *famous* capsule they use in many of their mics is the M7 capsule. The same that was used in very early Neumanns such as the U47, I believe. Thus, their UMT 92.1 tube LD (if I recall the model correctly) is probably pretty close to a U47. It doesn't look like a U47, though, and the folks at Microtech would never say anything like that in their product descriptions. That mic is priced at 1700-1800 Euros incl. VAT. So it is way cheaper than a Horch or a Sounddeluxe or similar boutique mics. In Germany, at least, you can order their mics for a 14 day test drive for free. Haven't done so, however. Chances are that I'd really like the mics and wouldn't be able to cough up the money.

FWIW, I asked a respected pro engineer, who doesn't post here and
who'd rather be anonymous, he said they're not quite up to the classic
Neumann's like the U47 or U67. Better by a large margin over the current
day Sennheiser-oops Neumann :) U87.

Chris

P.S. For those who don't know, Neumann is now owned by Sennheiser.
Some pro's think they have cheapened their product line as a result.

Now you've got my curriosity going too. I have heard some
engineers mention them as very nice mics, but what does
one go for US? Good source? I've been toying with the thought
of picking up a U87, but I am open to options... :)

Speaking of options & waiting for the Stephen Paul mic,
I'm tired of waiting too. It's amazing how people keep
recommending a mic that doesn't exist yet. When it comes
out, given his reputation, it should be nice...
but when..................... ? Is there probs with development?

Till then, gotta keep moving forward.

Bob :)

Macmidimusic carries Microtech-Gefell. The UM 92.1S is their flagship condensor that uses the M7 capsule. I haven't heard it, but it's sparked my curiosity.

Great mics but VERY expensive for most home recording ehthusiasts.

Sponge, Stephen just has strong perfectionistic tendencies.
(that's meant in a postive sense BTW)

Chris

I just recently got a pair of M300's as my main pair of SD condensors. So far I like them. Not bright at all in my opinion. Jnorman had a pair for awhile until he decided to upgrade (to Schoeps I think). I think he mentioned one time that he could not tell the difference between the M300's and the KM184's. A pair of used ones will set you back about $600. I think they go for about $850 a pair new. I have heard good things about the M930s as well but have never heard one in person.

Just my opinion

Becasue they don't make $100 condensors in China???

You mean Germany?

I dont really think they are overpriced at all, considering...
I would rather have one of these than 3 or 4 $200 mics, for sure. Something about good electronics and capsules that I like, but maybe I'm just weird :)
I'd rather have one Corvette than 5 Pintos....

Unless the Pintos had wings and could fly!

Most of you are probably too young to remember the old Popular Science articles in the 70's about "flying cars"...:)

Chris

I wish it was that way. I would love to fly over everyone else and get where I am going on time for a change.

Lets all buy a Gefell this week.

Amen, bro... it never really ends.

I juwst bought a Gefell UM70, should have it next week.
Time to sell the TLM-103 I guess.
