ok so i'm recording this great sounding song(right?) and i just got a new pack of cd-r's so i'm trying to save some of them. so i mixed the song down to a tape in my tape deck. took it home and it sounded like s***t. this is because of the tape right? if i mix it down to a cd it will sound better right?

An empty Cd-R costs only half a dollar, so you can find out very easily.:D

And off course your mix will sound different recorded on a CD than on a tape...

It might be, but more likely it is because of the difference in speakers and room acoustics between your studio and your home.

Here is something very important you should try to make a habit of doing: always compare your mixes to familiar (commercial) reference recordings that are similar in sound and style. If the commercial reference recording sounds like shit, either at home or in the studio, then you know something is screwed up in your listening environment.

It's very common to mix a song with way too much low end, or way too little highs, or visa versa. When you check it against the reference, though, it will be come immediately apparent. (Hey! What happened to all the low end on this P-Funk record???) If the reference CD sounds bass lite, for instance, it means that your ears have adjusted to hearing way too much bass, and you better back it off in your mix.

Without the reference, your mixes don't have much chance of coming out "right", especially if there are problems with the room or speakers.

i think that my studio monitors are flat. i have all the eq settings on the power amp set to 0. here's what i can't find out, you see my mix sounds good at the studio. but when i play it at home i sounds like it's good way to-much mid cuts. i would think that the home speckers are crap but when i play a pro recorded cd/tape on it, it sounds killer! then again i did get my studio monitors at radio shack. but i think that there flat so that's good.

That means absolutely nothing......

Again - you're jumping to some very wrong conclusions....

It actually doesn't matter AT ALL whether your monitors are "flat" or not....... (look at NS-10s for example - - widely used and hardly "flat") What matters is that you learn how to translate the mixes using the monitors you have.... if the monitors are poor, alll that means is that your "translation learning curve" is longerr and steeper (or insurmountable if the monitors are really crappy!)

LittleDog gave you some excellent advice about comparing mixes to a refererence......... to mix on monitors yyou have to KNOW your monitor sound and what the shortcomings are of your WHOLE LISTENING SPACE so that you can make informed decisions about the sonics of your mix........

Ged'dit?

I think we have the makings of a great tag team!
We just need a catchy name:

Blue-B 'n L-Dog?
Ursa 'n Canus?
Kibbles 'n Trout?
The Hibernator and the Master-baiter?

Someone should start a poll...

I heard if you chew a Tic-Tac while mixing, the tunes don't stink so bad.

I thought my monitors were flat, but after a few weeks they got warped from the humidity so they aren't flat anymore. Can anyone help me? :D

My monitors are rectangle-shaped. Only in 3-D.

Oh.. I put a clip of a reference tune on EVERY DISC i burn.... and listen to it every time i listen...

cuz I want to sound like I trackked 0n a $50,000 rig...

I missed this one -- probably because *I* was at JamFest where all you fucks were supposed to be!!! ;)

But that was a funny line, chess... all you missed was some 'verb on a train in there and it would have been the height of hilarity!

:D :D

LD... you haven't been reading MisterQQ's spam all this time?????

He organized a HR.com east-coast musician's jam which was held out near Hartford Connecticut this past weekend.... I think we ended up with about 25-30 people or so....

Great bunch of folks and it was great fun.... you should come out for next year's 'fest...!

Some pics of it are here --> JamFest '02

JGourd also has some, but I don't have the link handy....

Roel came all the way from Belgium??!!!

Wow - hope he won some sort of a prize!

Wish I could have done it - less than a couple of hours drive for me. Unfortunately I had the week-end from hell...

Friday night gig local, Saturday morning regular accompanist gig at local synagogue, Saturday night in Stowe VT. (210 miles away), Sunday gig at noon in Hampton, NH (road gigs included both playing and setting up and tearing down sound).

Then to make it more interesting I was recommended to apply for a part-time faculty position at berklee in music technology, except the closing date for applications was Monday, so I was desperately trying to get my resume together, burn CD samples of my work, etc. in time for me to drive it over there and hand deliver it before the deadline!

Sounds like you guys had more fun than I did!
