ok me and my friend play hendrix and stevie ray vaughan... and so far he has the ibanez tube screamer and we were wondering what pedal to buy to get a hendrix sounding distortion?
The early Hendrix was a Roger Mayer modded Fuzzface into a Marhshall. The later (BoG) was a RogerMayer designed pedal. I forget the name.
The Dunlop Fuzzfaces that are for sale now are Silicon. Jimi used Germainium transistors since that what the Fuzzfaces used back then. The hfe for the Q1 (transistor 1) should be about 70. Q2 should be about 110-120.
You can buy a re-issue and get it modded for a small fee if you are serious about it. If you are not going to mod it, then stay away from the FF's from the early 80's (models JH1 and JH2). They are so far off that it isn't funny. But they are good pedals to buy if you plan on getting it modded because they are cheap compared to the new reissues.
The JH1 and JH2 pedals I just mentioned have hfe's of upwards of 800-900. Compare that to most other silcones with hfe of 200-400...and those don't sound like Hendrix...
Silicon transistors have so much for distortion that they don't sound anything like the GE versions IMO.
I just build a silicon FF and am not very happy. It sounds okay as a fuzz pedal, but for what I was looking for (the Hendrix sound), it wasn't it.
I am going to get the GE tranisistors so I can do this properly.
That all being said, the BoG Hendrix stuff was Silicon transistors...but those were much lower in hfe than what is used. Plus the circuit was designed for it.
