I had this up in "Other Equip. & Reviews" ...only got 1 responce...I'm hoping the "Newbie" thread will be more understanding :)

My question is....Do I keep the VF80EX w/CD or trade it for the DP01FX/CD

I have been workin with my VF80 for sev hours & I find the Manual to be very confusing..I figured out how to rec trks and put in FX despite the directions....Does anyone here have Exp. with the DP01...does the manual make sence?...is the RECDING process easy/hard?..How many btns do yo have to push(ie..SHFT/this & shift/that) to go from start to CD burn? I have been in the Telco biz for 20+ yrs and have come across many a PBX manual that make you earn your pay..The VF man. is prob 1 of the most Bass akwards I've had to deal with. Maybe I shld take my PORTA Studio in & have it Prof. Cleaned..I figure the $550 to $600 can go towards outboard FX & such...anyone out ther willin to throw some advice my way??

Thanks for listinin...

Please forgive me if I break any Forum rules..I have a habit of jumpin in without testing the water

You're breaking forum rules by crossposting. I understand why you're doing it, but if you don't get an anwer in one forum you can't cut and paste the question into a different one. Pick the most appropriate category and post once.

The Fostex and the Tascam are comparable units made by companies that have a long history of making portable multitrackers. To suppose that you'd gain much by going to the time, trouble and cash investment it would take to punt the Fostex in favor of the Tascam is quite foolish in my opinion. Your time would be much better spent reading the Fostex manual with the machine in front of you, your instrument at the ready and a microphone plugged in.

Thanks///Sorry

Sorry about the cross posting..

Thank you for your input..I get what ur saying, I am just looking for an easy to use recorder..the "Shift+ xxxx" is a bit of a pain. I realize a digital rec. will not be as user friendly as the Portastudio I am replacing, I just want to get something with the least amount of BTN pushing start to finish. The other problem with the VF is 6trk +7/8 = master trk. The DP01 has 8trks + a master. I will rarley need more than six...8 wld be better..I am ultimately hoping to talk with someone who has used the DP01..What are the steps taken to REC/MIX/BURN. I also have other ?'s as well...as I ramble on, I can see I need to post in the Tascam forum.

You seem to be wanting to trade in your VF for a DP01...see if Tascam has a manual online that you can download...you can look at that & see what the steps to record are.

On the VF, a lot of functions require you to use the SHIFT key, but that just means there's more functions. Overall, it's pretty simple to use for basic recording (like what you could do with a tape recorder), but it also has a ton of capability...you can go as deep as you want.

Thanks for the reply jfrog...I did just that..the steps are not much diff. for basic recding...I just wish I could actually talk w/someone with EXP. on the DP..or VF..I have to many ?'s to hunt & peck them here...Niether manual flows very well. it does'nt help that I have limited knowledge with recding.(I am replacing a 4trk Portastudio)..I only get about 1-2 hrs a nite for "ME" time...wkends are for "soccer" & Harry homeowner stuff...that gives me an avg of 15-20mins a nite to wrk w/my new toy...Oh well
poor poor pitiful me... :(....thanks for listning..

I got a VS 880 about six years ago and about one week into it I felt like throwing it out the window.
Now I have a full blown DAW with Sonar.

Patience,if you keep at it,a year from now you'll laugh about this.

I've found the manual for my VF-08 has most of the answers...You just have to look in the right spot. I suspect that's the case for the VF80Ex also. Just keep playing with it...

If you get really stuck, ask a question here or, there is a couple other forums.

Fostex forum: http://www.fostex.com/mercuryboard/index.php

or VF16.COM: http://pub15.ezboard.com/bvf16

I hear ya about the limited time...I've got soccer 4 nights this week + saturday. :) It's hard to learn a lot abut the vf in 30 minute blocks.

Getting closer

Thanks for the replies...I hooked up with my buddy dwn the street (he has a VF160)..he answd. some of my ?'s...trbl is, he does not use even 1/4 of its features...I have decided to keep the VF and work thru the darkness..After reading the DP01 manual I came to the conclusion that the VF is just as good(except the 6trk thing) & $60 cheaper...I'll get around the -2 trks by bouncing to the 16 ghoast trks...I get a free wkend after this 1(wedding to attend in NOVA)..I am going to lock myself in the room..My plan is to figure it out, write usable(ie. newbie) directions and post them for anyone interested...Ill let ya know how it goes...
