i just bought a tascam fw-1082...really nice compared to my last setup (berhinger mixer with the tape outs to my laptop's stocl soundcard via a frankenstien-ish rca to 1.8'' cable. i need a headphone moitoring setup for about 5 people...i need a headphone amp/distributor that will allow me to send a basic headphone mix to a band for rehearsal and demo-ing...obviously headphone cables are not very long...everyone will be tracking in the same room with thier amps and whatnot elsewhere throughout my house (bedroom closets and such)with the control room/drum/live room in the living room...

what would be the best setup for the best price to do what i need to do...just a basic mix to that many people without them having to hover around the headphone amp, tethered by short little cables on the phones themselves?

You can still go with a headphone distribution amp. Just head to Radio Shack and pick up some headphone extension cables. 25 feet each for (if I remember correctly) about $8 each.

25 ft? i assume you have used those...i guess no sound problems with cables that long, right? i know you can't use a guitar cable that long...but i guess it would be fine for phones, huh?

Yep, used them with no problems. A headphone signal is different from an instrument signal.

And remember, these are just cue mix headphones. It's not like one needs them to be mastering suite monitors :).

There are the little amps by Amp or Rolls in the $40 dollar range. Very basic, 2-4 outputs, but small and generally do the job. Or, medium priced jobs by Behringer, Presonus, Samson. $40 to $100. 5 to 8 outputs, somewhat better amplifiers, more controls. The Alto 4-channel and 6-channel units look quite nice for slightly less than $100. Multiple inputs and gobbs of outputs, decent amplifiers.
