Good'ay,
I'm hoping to pick up a new pair of headphones sometime soon. I've budgeted around $100 CAD. They will be used only in the studio for recording & mixing (I will look into active monitors down the road). I was hoping to get a few suggestions of what to look for of exact examples within this price range? How do sony, nady, akg, audio-technica, etc...compare?
cheers in advance

Use the search function here, Down. Your question's been asked many times recently, including feedback about mixing on cans. (Senn 280s are my fav $100 USD closed cans, but I'd never do more than a very rough mix on them.)

you'll get the same response on every board you ask that question. You can't mix on headphones. You can use them for critical listening, checking the balance of a mix, listening to reverb trails, etc but you will NEVER get an accurate mix that will translate to any other sound system using headphones. Save your 100 bucks and SAVE till you can aford an entry level set of monitors. Look at M-Audio's Bx range, Wharfedale, or Yamaha in that order, anything cheaper is throwing money away. Avoid the illusion of the Behringer Truths, they tell anything but the truth on mixes.

I did that and spent a good 1/2 hour scrolling through posts and actually couldn't come up with much useful specific information. There where over 500 posts in a specific section search for headphones. That's the downside to such a huge forum...

LemonTree, I appreciate the input. But to jump from spending $100 on decent headphones (which can be used down the road as well), to $600 for M-audio Bx's is beyond my means at the present. While I do plan on putting money aside for decent monitors, it will take a good 2 years (I just got engaged - hence the lack of money...).

dwillis45, both those headphones are actually closer to the $200 range (in CAD). How do the Sony MDRV500DJ compare to the Sony MDR7506. They are $100 bucks less...

Any other input (its been well appreciated thus far :))
cheers

All I can say is......

in a few years when you can aford the monitors you'll realise the money and time you've wasted trying to mix in cans. It can't be done, end of story.

It's not a waste of time. Buying $100 computer speakers that gave me more volume and looked prettier would be a waste of money instead of holding out for real monitors. But buying headphones is a win-win. I'm going to need them anyway down the road. I can use them to sample mix while on the road - and them bring them to my mates house and do 'proper' mixes when needs be. On top of all this, I'm recording music right now for myself, simply for getting ideas down - not to distribute. Maybe down the road when I have better equip. I'll be capable to producing 'demo quality' music - but until them, I'm not striving for it.

I was wrong in the above stating those headphones where so pricy - I was looking at a pricy store and can do better shipping from the states...

Ok, question regarding the akg's. What's the difference between the AKG K240M & the AKG K240S. Both are 'Circumaural Stereo Headphones' (whatever that means) - and the K240S seem better suited for the studio, but why is that?

Thanks for those threads jeffree, they were both very informative.
I won't touch on the second one, because we don't need another trench warfare thread :D - granted it helped me consider all the possibilities and then relate it to my given situation.

It will either be the AKG K240S or the Sony MDR7506 - whatever I can get sent to my door, or picked up locally for cheapest -- they both seem like really solid 'cans' (my new term of the day from bbs)... :p

if you absolutely have to mix in cans I offer you the suggestion of the Audio Technica ATH-M40fs

Very detailed sound, not overly bright like most cans, light and comfortable and less ear fatigue than most cans will give you. If you can get to a store and try them out, take along some commercial CDs you are familiar with the sound of.

Good luck

Thanks LemonTree, I've looked into those cans and have read only good reviews. Actually, they are rated just a little higher than the previous 2 I mentioned. I could get them at a screaming price from zzsounds, but they don't ship to Canada - so I'll poke around and see what I can do. I need to order in the next day or 2...

cheers for all the help
