Hey Harv,
I see you finally are checking out the Marshall V77... any initial feelings about the mic? Kinda had high hopes for that one.
Also, ever get your hands on the 1st run RNMP yet? Any thing you are allowed to say about it?
Hope you are well...

I've been really liking the V77 these days for vocals. I started using it early September of last year, and now it just stays up on a stand, ready to go, in both rooms. I haven't tried it against the SP stuff I just got from Alan, so I'm looking forward to hearing it against something like the TB-1.

The V77 is a really nice vocal mic IMO, whether it's on a quiet singer 2" away, or a belter from 2 or 3' away. I've used it on both types of singers with great success. Very neutral sounding mic to my ear, with a slight high end lift that provides some detail, without getting shrill. It seems to work pretty well with female and male voices alike.

No word on the RNMP yet, but it should be pretty soon. I understand (second hand) that there's a problem with one of the switch suppliers getting the parts out in a timely manner, and that's the big holdup right now.

You know... I was thinking the V77 was the new tube one, the V69, that you were expecting to get from MXL. I'm stupid.
Did you ever get to try the V69?

Why doesnt FMR just go down to the local radio shack they have switches.:D

I don't think Mark is welcome at the local Radio Shack store since the last time he was there to buy some resistors. He brought his test station with, opened every bag of resistors in the place, and only bought 6. After further testing at home, he returned 4.

I would love to hear/see the comparisons on these mics. Is this still going to happen? Also, are you going to comment on the SP-T3?

I plan to report on all the SP mics as soon as I have some time to test them.

Is there any report on these mics? I was thinking about SP but need info.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IMHO a report on microphones is most of the times not quite objective.

You must have them for a long time and have used them in many situations before you can say something about them. A while ago I got a CD from a pro audio magazine with a test of all popular tube mics. The "test" was the sound of a bunch of keys and the sound of a male and a female vocalist.

I have both the V69 and the V77. And I have bought a SP B1 a month ago. I also have a Neumann M149 so I can compare them to a decent tube mic I suppose.

Harvey says the V77 is neutral sounding, he's right! The V77 comes pretty close to the Neumann sound.
The V69 sounds bigger and more hyped. I recently used both the 69 and the 77 in a bigband recording. The 69 on bariton sax and the 77 on tenor sax and both mics did a very good job. Nice off axis response as well. I've used them on vocals and acoustic guitar, liked them both.

The B1 has been used on alto sax (not in the bigband), snare, hi hat, guitar amp and vocals. Pretty good microphone for 100 euro.

(btw, the Neumann sounds better)
