The pickup switch on my Ibanez GAX 30 is acting up lately so I figure it would be a nice time to upgrade to a better guitar. I play casually (definately not pro-level) on a daily basis and I do a lot of recording at home. What would you guys recommend as a step up? I was thinking either a strat or telecaster...just for something a little different. I've just started thinking about a new guitar so be open with the suggestions! Nothing too expensive please :P

A new switch is going to run you $10 max and having it installed maybe $20.

Is that cheap enough for you? ;)

What kind of music do you play? Do you want a tremolo or not? Bolt-on or set neck? Humbuckers or single coil pickups? try to answer atleast one of those otherwise you'll be buying every guitar.

My advice is just go to a couple guitar stores, spend an entire day trying every single thing that you can, and get to know what you like and what you dont.

I was hoping for a $5 upgrade :) Anyways, I forgot to mention that I'd probably hand this guitar down to my cousin and let him fix it. That way I have an excuse to upgrade :)

In regards to the type of music I play: I'm pretty open to any types of music, but to make things easier I usually play the usual rock / blues stuff. Lots of pop rock covers and funk too. I play a lot of folk on my acoustic if that helps at all. I primarly play drums in a band, so I'm not too educated in terms of the technical things of guitars.
