Hey guys,..

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could download some backing tracks in different styles so that I could demo some leads (Different amps and amp tones/sounds ) over the top of them?

Mostly looking for Blues and Hard Rock.

Thanks,
Rick

I would recommend you record your own backing tracks as you will be able to match the best backing tone to lead tone with the gear you already have. You might download something and find a great lead sound for it... but the same lead tone might sound terrible over a different backing tone... matching lead to rhythm is something that most people overlook. It takes a long time and a shitload of experimentation to get the right combination. Just my 2c

Consider using something like BandInABox from PG Music. It can generate full songs from chord charts with tempo and style set by you. Makes a good basis for various things.

Rick, do you have midi capabilities on your computer's sound card and a midi keyboard? If so, I know of some free sites with some great backing tracks, but you need midi.

Ed - Thanks for that info!! I'm going to download a sample of them tonight........looks pretty good, but maybe a bit pricy (??)

Sajs- I'm not really sure if I do or don't, I'm using a Delta 1010, and I think it may have midi in/out on the breakout box (Rack mount interface 8in / 8 out.)?? I don't believe that the card has any though.

I've been thinking about getting a cheap keyboard for some midi stuff......all though I know nothing about midi really :(

When I do casual gigs I use BandInABox for the songs that require backing tracks....I guess for 10 years now. Mostly they're reduced to bass and drums.

True, the full blown version with all the styles is pricey. I know it's not legal but I go in with several other local players here and pool money for updates when they occur. Actually PG Music gets more out us this way as we wouldn't bother if we had to pay full price.

Another option for you might be to get something like a Yamaha PSR keyboard and play along with its rhythm tracks after putting the progression to memory.

Can you give us some links?

Thanks,

I get more use out of the PG Music stuff that just about anything else. My wife sings at church, and I do most of the music part using BIAB. I then produce a CD with the basic music (drums, bass, keys, etc). We play that, I play guitar with it, and she sings. We don't get many complaints...
It's not pro level, but it works pretty well.

There is a short clip of what we used yesterday here:

This one had both basic and guitar included due to service logistics on 12/11/05.

Ed, that was pretty good!

I think something like that would be right up my alley. :)

Good to see someone using their talents for a good cause too! ;)

Check out John Petrucci's site, there are monthly downloads of backing tracks (professionally recorded with rhythm, bass and drums) for forum competitions. The cool thing is he will also tell you what scales/modes etc work best with each of the tracks so you can experiment with different patterns. Check it out, I'm not sure where exactly on the site it is but you should find the link if you look in the forum.

Yes I will send some midi site links when get to my home computer, that's where they are.

Keep in mind, some songs are really good and some really really suck. It also depends on what you are playing the song through.

If I play those midi tracks through my Korg keyboard, they sound fantastic. If I play them through my Casio keyboard, not so good.

Even if I change the midi setting to have them play through my headphones through the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, they don't sound that good.

So what I am saying is you need a good hardware synth to have these midi files sound good.

I don't use software synths, but I am sure some of them will work great.
