i'm just getting started on the home recording game and i just have a couple of questions...

(i'm sorry if i sound like a complete idiot...i'm really not too hip on technology)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...d_bbs_1/103-8476432-7351851?v=glance&n=507846

i've been looking at these "mbox"es and i noticed that it only has "two analog ports" my main question is: what exactly does that mean? does that mean that i could only record from up to two mics at a time? i'm looking to record a drum set and i was thinking i would need at least four mics on that. could someone set me straight? am i going to have to upgrade to the next level?

(i'm sure i'm going to have tons of questions as i do more research)

The Delta 44
The Delta 1010
The Delta 1010LT
The Delta 66
The FireWire 1814
The FireWire 410
The Audiophile 192
The Audiophile 2496
The Firewire Audiophile
The FireWire Solo
The Mbox
The 002/r
The 001

all work with Pro Tools or Pro Tools M-Powered...and every software package on the planet

well price isn't too big of an object. i really just want to be able to record four things at once. that delta 44 audio sound card looks pretty good-but those aren't microphone cable outputs are they? the look more like guitar or bass cable outlets...

also if i got that and the protools software, would that be all i need?
(i mean computor hardware wise)

i doubt you will ever be able to say "this is all i need"
its so easy to become a gear junky and just need that ONE MORE thing.

but yes.. for your computer.. a delta44 and protools can do it.

you have no preamps with the Delta 44.

i use the Delta 66 (bascially the same but with SPDIF, which i never use :p) with a Yamaha MG 12/4 mixer. this is good for me - it lets me have quite a lot of control over monitoring what i've already recorded, as well as using the 6 mic preamps on there. but you might want a standalone preamp, but i can't help you there, i've only ever used the MG12/4.

either way, you need a preamp to boost your mic signal to line level.

I agree that Protools is not the absolute.
Look at packages such as Cakewalk Sonar 4 producer or Cubase. They have as many features as Protools but they are not LE versions(unless you buy Sonar Studio or Cubase SE)........
Plus Sonar has Protools Color and Pan layouts.

Look at the Delta 66 and a 4 Bus mixer and a software package as a great start to your recording setup.

But dont fall into the trap of the Protools Hype!

ok this is really helping...thanks everyone

so the main difference between the delta 44 and 66-no preamp on the 44? but if i got a delta 44 and this yahmaha 12/4 mixer that would be all the preamp i would need correct?
again, what exactly would plug into the delta interface? the 12/4 mixer accomodates microphone cables (as far as i understand) so would you plug the mics through the mixer, then into the delta, then into the computor?

and would anyone else say that cakewalk is the most effective software (besides protools)?

(the whole reason i've been sort of drawn to protools is that i know a number of people who use it and swear by it, so please understand that i'm a little hesitant to use somthing else. it just sort of seems to be the standard (i mean- it even has its own "for dummies" book) whatever software i do choose, i'm sure it will take me a while to master it, but if i choose protools, i'm thinking that i may be able to master it faster.)

HA! I got a negative rep from someone on that post??
At least give me a bad rep if I say something incorrect...all I did was post correct information! And at least be a man and sign your name to your bad rep
