I'm new to this so be nice. I just some clarification on some stuff.
I'm gonna record heavy metal guitar. My computer is up to spec. In my understanding their is a few ways of getting the sound into your computer.
1) guitar amp-->pre-amp/DI box--->line in sound card.
2) guitar amp-->mixer---> line in sound card.
3)guitar---> mic the amp---->pre-amp/DI box--->line in sound card.
4)guitar--->mic the amp---->mixer---> line in sound card.

Is the above correct?
Since I'm gonna record metal I should use a dynamic mic, right?

Thanks

All of the listed methods are viable paths. #1 & 2 require the right outputs (a line out jack) on your amp. Some don't have this capability. You're not trying any silly paths that go in circles or require a green felt-tip marker. Given the tense of "gonna" I'd suggest just dive in and RECORD something. If you go for the miced amp, play around with mic positioning to find the one that sounds like "metal" to you.

While a dynamic mic like am SM57 is used for this purpose all over the place, other types of mics are as well. The SM57 is dirt cheap and is useful for other mic tasks so why not just give it it a try?
