Getting a good guitar recording through Line 6 Guitarport?

Hello everyone,

So I have a lot of experience recording and producing and mixing trance, techno, and electronic music, but i've wanting to stray into post-hardcore and such styles.

I am running a Line 6 GuitarPort to record my guitar tracks. It's not the best equipment, but it's all I have for now. It runs on ASIO drivers and there's no latency to worry about. It records well to Sonar 6 Producer Edition. Now the problem i'm having is this:

My guitar tracks don't sound like they are very good. It sounds like the distortion is too overpowering even though it's dialed down on the Line 6 software. They just don't sound even near acceptable.

Any hints or tips? Should I just set the GuitarPort with a clean sound and add effects in Sonar? I also have Amplitube 2 i've been working with.

Any tips for a semi-newb? lol.

Much appreciated.

I''ve got the same thing, but I use it with gearbox. I installed the kb37 and use its software with my guitar port. try doing some post eq, and what not. I'd stick with the distortion in guitarport thought because it generallay is better than software distortion vst/dx whatever

Yeah I use Gearbox for the amp models and effects and then it sends a signal to Sonar but yeah I should definitely try some Post-EQ.

I guess I was so used to trance music where the mixing down and mastering was easy :P

Thanx.

Record clean and then re-amp using a real amp/speaker combo. Distortion is one of those things that doesn't work so well in the digital domain (yeah, that's coming from me SSG :D ), although personally I love obvious digital distortion... but it has it's time and place.

Probably the only thing that sounds pretty decent as a guitar amp/distortion modeler is the Native Instruments Guitar Rig as VST/AU.

Are you using a pre-set in the Gearbox software? I'm no expert, but i've been really impressed with the tones that that little thing can generate.

I've mostly started out with the presets, and tweaked them a bit.

You can hear some tones i got with it here:

Cheap 125$ pawn show Ibanez, and yamaha acoustic guitar. Used it on acoustic guitar, and a few electric guitar tracks. Even used one of the pre-amp models on the voice i think. I really like the distorted guitar/power chord tone on the electric guitar in the chorus.
