Anyone care to name their favorite drum sound ever heard on an album or CD? I'm sure this been done a million times before but what the hell.

My vote for the best sounding kit on a recording: Soundgarden. I was listening to "Fell On Black Days" today. I had forgotten how amazing that guy's kit sounded. The snare is so fat, yet crisp, yet warm all in one...it doesn't sound triggered or processed either (of course, I could easily be wrong about that)....if I could get my drums to sound like that, I could die tomorrow. He's a totally underrated drummer too. Matt Cameron uses great taste in his playing.

By all means break it up too. Name your favorite snare or kick....cowbell, whatever.

I love a couple different drum sounds.

I love josh's kit on all 3.5 a perfect circle albums (hes probably my fav drummer)
I love Undertow, Aniema and Lateralus
All Zep

Who has heard tools version of No Quarter, OMG, i love the way the kit sounds!

the snare sound on The Jesus Lizard album- "Goat" = awesome.

the kick on the Clutch album "Elephant Riders" = really good.

(off topic) the guitar tone on the first Minor Threat EP = unbeatable

& all Zep

Jimmy Chamberlin

Any earlier stuff by Jimmy Chamberlin of the Smashing Pumpkins (Up to Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness ) sounds great. The later their stuff, the more boomy it gets.

His kick, his toms, cymbals, timbalitos, all sound what I consider to be perfect....and his snare...MY GOD, HIS SNARE!

red hot chili peppers - bloodsugarsexmagik (chad smith)
that is just the most amazing sound ever. dont know if its the kit or the mics or the room or whatever its just beautiful

Regatta de Blanc was great

I'm a Tool fan as well - I head that the kit was drums made from cymbal material.

And I'll add..... "When the levee breaks" - I think it waz just a great room with a little flanger added.

I love the BSSM drum set. My favorite Kick though is probably greendays. Theres somethin about it that just kicks my ass everytime i listen to it

I heard that they slowed down the tape and that is one of the reasons it sounds so huge and low.

Death-Symbolic  Gene Hoglan's kit sounds amazing, as does his drumming.

Lynn drum, "Born to be Alive", 1978! God, I gotta stop drinking!!! Pew-pe-pew-pew!!!

I second the Soundgarden opinion. I love that drum sound. I also like the drum sound from Nirvana's In Utero, mainly because it is so different from what the "standard" drum sound should be. I like the kick sound off of nevermind as well because it is so defined and clear; other than that, the rest of the drum sound is so-so. I think it is too slick sounding. I like the raw sounds more. But thats just me. :)

Also the drum sound from the Tenacious D album. That is one of my favorite drum sounds. Especially the snare.

Hmm...

Nirvana - In Utero
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Local H - Whatever Happened To PJ Soles?
CKY - Infiltrate Destroy Rebuild

And any and all things Zeppelin.

Don't laugh, but the only drum sound i consistently like is in country music -- the more up beat stuff like the older Tim McGraw stuff. It's probably easier to do though, since theirs less intensity in country music and its easier to have a nice drum sound without having to worry about presents or specifically equing drums so they fit in to the little notches in the sound like in hard rock music with a big sound. But, my favorite kick sound is Lars Ulrich's on his old pearl-white tama he used before St. Anger (best heard on the S&M symphony album). I wasn't that big of a fan of the snare or anything else though.

gotta be:

al jackson from booker t & the mgs
benny benjamin from the funk bro.s

Danny Carey has the best toms... I love the sound of Josh Freese's snare... I'm not too sure about kick drums... probably Danny Carey.
