My 120 watt crate amp has an extention speaker out. i was wondering if this could be used for a 4X12, or is it just a speaker. thanks.

Yes it can be used with any cabinet of the proper impedance.

Just match the ohm rating, if it says 8 ohms out hook it to an 8 ohm cabinate, if it says 4 ohms out hook it to a 4 ohm cab. It's that simple.

The only other consideration is to be sure the cabinet you connect can handle the power output of the amp. Connecting a 120W amp to a cabinet that can only handle 50W may not be a good approach.
